I think we're getting desperate for a clue...

Well I am

if im standing 32 feet away from 8 pairs of shoes and i take a step that is half the distance left to the shoes, how many steps will it take me to reach them.

The answer is not a number!

It's the wording, isn't it?

· Half the distance left to the shoes - that would mean half the distance remaining to the shoes, normally, but I think it might mean the direction (i.e. to the left (to the left, every you own in the box to the left)). Makes no sense though.

· Feet (distance) vs feet (shoes)

· "I take a step" - a footstep? A stride? A step of stairs/ladder/etc?

· 8 pairs of shoes, i.e. 16 shoes. Are they in a row? Are they stacked up? Are they in a nondescript heap? Maybe they're being worn, i.e. by athletes on a running track.

There's some ideas...

Surely thats asking us the number of steps required...

32,16,8,4,2,1,0.5,0.25..... and so it goes on

you would never reach the shoes...?

Not a number, so it's something like "a few" or some comparison. I wonder...

That's if every step you take only halves the distance, not just the first one..... Hmmmm

The riddle states that if he takes a step, that is half the distance left to the shoes so thats the details we have to base our answer upon...

Therefore no matter how many steps are taken he will never reach the shoes.

I am positive its the answer!

The numbers i gave ARE red herrings as clooneman discovered a long time ago! Like i said simple maths to work out the answer, (ie. to discover that there was no numerical answer!)

I suppose the clue of "the answer is not a number" gave it away a little but I had my companions' state of mind to think of!
