Your entitled to your opinion as is anyone but my own opinion is that clans have possibly saved the site in many ways, i for one would probably not play or come online much if there was no clans or anything like that, apart from the odd argument and what not that goes with it most of the time it is fun and a good laugh and as many players have said they have become a better player due to clan league play. My opinion though.

were not really talking about clans they were just mentioned in conversation as someones view on why pool was quiet im sure clans have there place.... not sure how clans have saved pool though

I think bluenose1872 is correct about the reason for low chat room activity: tournaments.

The times people are thinking back to are the times that I started playing- about 2 and a half years ago. There was 1 tournament per hour. In between that, people often waited for tournaments. Where? In the chat room or in ranked games. But many simply took a break and went to the chat room which was full.

Now there are always at least 3 tournaments going on simultaneously, so people only stay in the chat room if they really don't want to play!

Clans were just as big back then as they are now. Tournaments are the denominator that has changed.

I don't really know as to why the site seems quieter than it once was. I just thought I'd comment on rubber_ducks post.

Such a creative person and some very interesting comments have always come from rubber_duck, as shown above...what a legend

ive been too hungover to read all these posts, but i think we should all do our bit by getting the word around about this site, to get more people playing

Better theory, clan players play tourneys and ranked to keep their eye in for the clan games...haven't been any clan games for a month so the 150 players you were on about had a break and funky went quiet.

The many tournaments are the issue I think. People are always waiting on a game to start, if they wait in the chat room they're only going to be there for a minute or two before they get their invite. Not much time to start up a conversation.

I quite like the idea of ranked tournaments. Gives a good reflection of a players ability. I'm not sure exactly how it works these days but from what i've read on this thread you get more points added/deducted in a tourny game compared to a normal ranked game? If this is the case it makes the entire ranking system redundant and this could be a cause for people looking elsewhere.

Advertising could be an issue. Its all well and good saying people are growing out of it, there's always new people to join.

I've not played on here properly for about 5 years now, when I left there was a thriving community on the forums and there would normaly be about 10+ people online that I knew to be regulars. (I was on a hell of a lot though so this might just be me) normaly around 100-150 players in the evening GMT, dropping to around 30-50 by the earlier hours of the morning.

Also funkysnooker did not exist. I blame the success of that

Although it seems like that far back, it was actually only 2007/2008 that the leagues started, plus MMT has only had his account since 07 anyway.

We did however for a few months before have friendlies mainly between UT and a clan that pool_bird put together.

There were unsuccessful attempts at clans about 6 or 7 years ago but the league as we know it now has only been here since 07/08.

I think squeezy nailed it.

Too many tournaments, agreed. Though I'm not complaining.
It keeps the rate of games up through the dead hours.
Sometimes through the night you wait far too long for an opponent.

Also...
Has anyone noticed more and more lag online lately?
Not just Funkypool, but everywhere.
Signal dropped? Connection lost? 10 seconds delay between shots in a game? I've factory restored my system so many times.

Also...
There's an element of players that seem to enjoy putting people off more than playing honestly for the challenge.
Some players just seem to be bent on throwing abuse at people too.
Still, c'est la vie.

edit:
But the regulars rock!

Yep. It seems like forever but I had been playing for a year or two before I put the first successful clan league together.

Potty started helping me in the second season if my memory serves me right and I dropped out in probably the third or fourth season and stopped playing altogether. Snooker got their own clan league a couple of seasons after Pool started theirs.

Just browsing the forums nowadays as for some reason, I can only play on IE (Which I don't use). I've done all the usual stuff to fix my Java which works with every site bar this one and it just says I need to update, no matter how many times I do it....So I gave up trying!

I'd say the reason the site is so much quieter than it used to be is due to two things.
1) The ridiculous amounts of tournaments that mean they lack any sort of prestige nowadays.
2) Nick resting on his laurels and stopping doing updates to the site. Doubles and cash games would have took the site to another level but sadly, look like they will never happen. Would be nice to see a member win the lottery and buy it off him.

Would need good coders to do all that though if that was the case. I am going to take your lottery thing as kind of a joke but in all seriousness if i won the lottery then i would make him an offer of course. It is a great site, not like it used to be though.

I thought all admin had the rights to code things and what not and also talk about ideas and things, maybe that is something Nick could think about as he is not on as much as he used to be.

There is a lot of people who hate the tournaments the way they are now and i think that would be a very good start to bring life back to funkypool. Every little helps.
