If all are full size : 25k x 20 = 500k

If all are 17 k = 340k

If all are like Tids animated Gif, but DOUBLE the size = 260k

Therefore, if all users used animated gif's, the loading time could in fact reasonably be half that of full size jpegs.

.... and Match.

In laymans terms Steph, technically there is no reason why we can't have animated gifs.

Now, Magicblack McEnroe the god damn ball was NOT in!

But...the reason they were rejected was on annoyance value, not on sizes, loading time or lag.

My comments from the first page:

We (mods/admins) discussed the pros and cons extensively, and the main opinion was that they were generally just an irritating flicker in the corner of the eye - especially when you have a whole page full of them (on a forum page there could feasibly be moving gifs all down the left side. And to add to that, gifs within the text boxes too).

The decision was basically that, for what short-term novelty worth they had, we could do without.

And that's that for now really. Nothing to do with whether they could be easily accomodated (they clearly can), but rather - did we want them and did we like them. The majority decided we didn't.

Are we talking controlled conditions? I hope the variables werent tampered with, or that the questions were leading?

I will have to report this to the ethics committee for further investigation.

Not a vote, a discussion that resulted in deciding against them for now.

If you're fair tibnab, you'll know that players (including mods and admins) are listened to much more here than on most sites.

So when the odd decision doesn't go your way, you've just got to roll with it. Nick would've taken into account the points raised on this thread I'm sure.

Also, possibly, how few people have made them

Flapjack are you going to post that on every thread?

On this thread we are discussing wether motioned animations should be allowed on the site; and how hungover I am today..

Ooops - clearly i overloaded you mate

(warning - this is what happens if you argue with me for too long...)

But, back to the point.

The reason i'm still on this thread is that personally, i find non-animated avatars on forums etc rather dull and pointless, therefore i fully side with those who want them and would have had one myself.

I'm glad Martin clarified that they simply decided they didnt like them.

However i shall now roll back to the initial argument which was that they were rejected because they were distracting.. was that a little porkie then?
