i see the common player didnt have a vote on it

Not a vote, a discussion that resulted in deciding against them for now.

If you're fair tibnab, you'll know that players (including mods and admins) are listened to much more here than on most sites.

So when the odd decision doesn't go your way, you've just got to roll with it. Nick would've taken into account the points raised on this thread I'm sure.

Also, possibly, how few people have made them

LOL Just jestin' fella, im more than happy with my gif im just adding to the funny side of the topic

The reason i'm still on this thread is that personally, i find non-animated avatars on forums etc rather dull and pointless, therefore i fully side with those who want them and would have had one myself.

Spinner you didn't even bother putting up a pic!!

I'm an avid forum fan like a fair few people on the site, and i seem to spend a good amount of time browsing threads for fun/staff related issues. To be honest i would prefer to read what somebody has to say without having a flashing Fairy/Monster/Santa flickering in the corner of my eye, in much the same way as when i'm reading a book at home.

If i wanted flashing animations i would resort to watching an episode of the Simpson's with a Christmas tree stuck on my lap.

A picture is worth a thousand words, a gif gives you a headache.

Since it couldn't be animated i didnt see the point.

I do see what you're saying too Pool_Life, however i find the pictures just as distracting (I though the professional forum layout on FunkySnooker at the time this layout was introduced here to be much more slick and pleasant), whether they are moving or not doesn't bother me.

A feature as suggested a while ago to be able to be able to turn the avatars off altogether would be a big improvement.

Anyways, we still haven't had an answer to that one simple question from right at the start of the debate.

How can an animated .gif be distracting but an animated advert not?

that was all i asked!

Also, how about only having an avatar for the user who starts the thread? Having one on every post is very repetitive and is wasting a lot of text space!

But not as repetitive as having a flashing userpic on 'every' post you read by 'every' user?

Great, all sorted then.

Check Mate! Gotta be.

And if it's any consolation Spinner, I love your 3D pic.

If I make myself go cross eyed and tilt my head at 45% (there's an image for you), it almost looks 3D too.

Not very much though.

Animated gifs can be turned off adverts can't, i understand why we have adverts so that's not the issue.

If animated gifs can be disabled then i don't see the problem. By the way this thread should really be in the game queries section, i wouldn't want Nick to miss it

This has already been answered 1984.

Why should people have to go through the inconvenience of having to turn them off? Also many people don't even know how.

And spinner, well done. You've proved that a still pic can be annoying too. It looks like a pool full of frogspawn and it's making my eyes go funny.

(who said anything about flashing? theres a huge difference between things moving and flashing.. Women in my case...)

Nope. The main question hasn't been answered. How can an animated advert on the game window not be distracting whilst an animated gif never on the game window can..

I said right at the start that this point owuld be ignored, and so far, it has..

(Martin, if you have to tilt your head at 45 degrees to see a stereogram i have to say your eyes must already be quite "funny"!

The answer to your question is that some of the ads might be distracting to some people, but they are a necessity. The gifs on the other hand are not a necessity.

Spinner, i would have expected you to be a bit more understanding on peoples opinions regarding gifs, especially since you were so unhappy with a simple background colour change just a few weeks ago. You complained that the shade was unbearable to an extent, yet you can't understand how anyone could find a moving image in a loop unbearable?

*confused smiley*

Having animated pics isnt going to put anyone off their game since pm windows can be minimised.

In the case of the forum... If people are allowed to have pictures next to their name why not let them have a little fun with them so they can put up exactly what they want? Its not like you have to concentrate deeply in a timed way to read a forum post like in the game. If you dont want an animated picture dont have one, if you do then why not?

Personally i dont see what all the fuss is about because a lot of animated gifs are quite fun.

Yes Peter.

Animated gifs 'can' be fun, for all of 10 seconds! This is a gif i rejected a while back, so just imagine it's walking:

Posted Image

There's no doubting it was very smart, and i felt a little guilty rejecting it if i'm honest, but when browsing the forum i really don't want to be distracted by any moving images in my peripheral vision. Of course advertisements are the exception, basically because i'm aware there isn't a site without them.

I will concede that the profile page is a different matter though, only because we don't have to view them for a sustained period of time like if they were on the forum.

The decision has been made for the time being, but if we decide to reverse this you will be the first to know! We value everybody's opinions on the site, so i can guarantee you that any thoughts posted on this thread will be taken on board, and maybe a compromise will be reached at some point in the future.

Well to be honest, it wasn't so much the background color as the overall look. It was such a ashame to move to the old fashined tacky style from such a neat professional look. This is partly why i support the animated gif idea, to brighten things up a bit since we are stuck with the "new" format.

Really though, this thread has been about the humour of the debate for the most part, and it doesn't look set to change!

However your initial answer still didn't answer the question i asked. Remember whether the ads are a necessity (we all know, as i stated right at the beginning, that they are necessary, no-one argues that more often than myself on these forums!) is irrelevant in the question of whether they are a distraction or not.

However you did finally concede on that last post so thats all we wanted! Not animated .gifs everywhere, just an admission that they were the same!

How about you magic??

But anyway, the forum is for reading posts/threads and not looking at moving pictures.
