I've been telling people how to do this for a few years now!

But rather than repeat it, just look back the the first page of this thread...

I'll probably just be repeating what martin said, but we have discussed it in the best interests of everyone on the site.
there is no specific advantages to admin or moderators, aside maybe from the fact we have an awful lot of pm windows open at any given time.
I can happily say I use a fast enough computer, but there are a lot of people on here that don't.
If animated GIF's were aloud, think of how long you would be looking at to open a full forum page? I dont wan't to wait 15 seconds to see a ruddy cartoon motorbike !! (no offence tidnab!)

Disabling animations may have various consequences for users on other day to day activities on the net, why should they have to go mucking about with it, so you can show a little animation? I have to acess a couple of college sites which require animations, as well as a lot of stock sites etc. etc. etc.

Admittedly it is a difficult decision to make, and it is not the lack of advantages of it that lost it for you guys, it was the consequences.

As for the ad's argument. spinner I'm surprised you'd take that approach. When you enter into a debait the first thing you always do is look at your opositions point of view..

It's quite simple, but I'll make it complicated...

no gifs + ad's = everyone reasonably happy

Gifs + no ad's = no site

gifs + ad's =

there you go! for all you mathematical types.. It's simple logistics at the end of the day!

what do you mean...cartoon motorbike?
Thats really meeeee with my locks flowing in the breeze

Naaah truthfully.... no offence taken, im happy that ive managed to actually un-animate my gif for the sake of abiding by the rules, I was just 'kicking myself' for trying to change it too another animated gif (i was unaware of the rule change at the time....or was a bit drunk??? ....the latter me thinks)
I thought by trying too change to another animated gif, that if, for some reason it was
re-fused due too the creepy/scary factor then the original bike animated gif would have stayed, more fool me though....BUT....Im happy enough now.

and on a personal note.... i dont care a hoot about the ads moving, something has to pay for the site so we can enjoy free play, Take the rough with the smooth is my motto

i doubt copyright is the main influence as a lot of still pics can infringe copyright law just as equally, but mine isnt protected by copyright.
Copyright may not apply because its not being re published/produced for personal use or used to make profit etc......but im not sure of that fact for web pages, not my forte im afraid

Well the gif i planned on using was made by me, as would most peoples, so the copyright thing is no different to still images (i notice quite a few football badges around, which blatantly infringe this rule )

Please note i was careful to point out that when discussing ads, i was ONLY referring to thier being a possible distraction as it the case here. We all know the help fund the site so are required.

As for slowing computers down, remember we are still talking about a maximum of 25k here, all still "slides" which require no processing. A 1982 48k zx spectrum could display that without affecting performance.

Dont mix up tiny .gif's with complex flash animations!

Spinner regardless of computer processor speed then! 25k's at a reasonable download speed of about 25k, even less on dial up..

Take the 15 -30 posts you can get on a full forum page and thats a lot of waiting.
For what?

I dont want to point out the obvious, but sometimes its necessary...

A 25k .gif is the same size as a 25k jpeg (or any other format)

Just the same as a ton of lead weighs the same as a ton of feathers...

Touche!

Well, i think your animated version had about 5 frames, but even at double that, it still comes in at 13k, 4k less than another certain user.

Therefore, on an average forum page (like the first one in this thread) there would be 20 images.

Assuming every post is from a different user, and that the person viewing has cleaned out thier cache so has to download everything, that means :
