dis-used railway line at the time so theres no danger of swerving into cars.......but i do taunt them and give a thumbs up to anyone that gets me, i see it as a laugh

aye mines closed again. The thread was always going to be controversial each has there own opinion but you must express it properly and maturely to have a proper debate. As tidnabs states you did knock our opinions 1_eye

Are you saying I didn't express myself maturely and properly? I have given clear explanations for each of my opinions, ones which are based on real life situations I go through. You've based yours on god knows what as you refuse to answer when asked. Generalising isn't mature - and you saying BRITIAIN is lazy purely because you've seen one link about it's University students is a HUGE generalisation.

And I don't get what the mention on the pavements means? A passing? Just came across as more of a statement of belief to me - but then you do mention perception......... anyway I just thought it didn't make sense for a pavement to be just as dangerous without snow!

You lot can have your pesimistic opinions, I was just trying to show you that it isn't always what it seems, and The Sun (newspaper) isn't the be all and end all! (That was meant as humour, in case anyone perceived otherwise)

(See I generalised there, OOER)

I didnt target you did i the only thing i said i that you knocked our opinions. It was the first link ive seen infact there is nothing to say that any country is the laziest on the internet but ive seen it reading the mail last month and the guardian.

I wouldnt call it a generalisation anyway its britain as whole if i said ethiopia was a poor country i would be right and you wouldnt argue despite the fact there are rich people in there.

Im making mine about 3ish remember to upload it onto your user pic

Anyway you expressyour opinons backed up with quotes and facts you must of done well at GSCE english literature aswell lol. Just saying try not to clash so heavily with others opinions as its quite intimidating when you spit out a comment like "codswallop" "nonsense".

I think we should use this thread justto tlak about the snow now and how were spending our time its got far to political. I think we have also all been challenged to making a bigger snowman than sporting has on his user pic!

I heard some lucky people got off AGAIN!!!

This is so annoying, out of my 12 years at school I've NEVER had a day off because of snow, and some people have had 4 this week

I'm so sad

Gaaaaaah!!

Fell off my bike on the way to school... (Wasn't a hard body slam type fall, just bike went one way and I managed to get my foot down to hop away into the fence...)

And who was saying that we don't go to school through wind, sleet and snow...?

If anything, today was WORSE than Monday and Tuesday

QUITERS!

Where's Spinner and Jan when you need them, they're never ones to back down from a good old chin wag!!

No offence intended at all Alexander, but I thought you set the thread up to debate 'Pathetic Britain', I didn't mean to intimidate you at all. Codswallop was meant to be a funny word...... I just merely wanted to set a few 'facts' straight before everyone started bashing this great country and it's people!

The problem here is the now melting snow turning in to ice. I shall more than likely go college however I can't see the children going to school - not if the weather is going to be as forecasted!

Enjoy your time off!!

Rugby starts (weather permitting) on Saturday!

Im off tommorow aswell thats the whole week

Transport Information
We have been informed by -------- Borough Council that there will be no school transport running tomorrow (06/02/09) for the entire Borough.

Weather Information
School closed today (05/02/09) due to heavy snow on roads (which haven't been gritted) causing many staff to be unable to reach the site. Additionally this has added to the ice and snow around the site. We are planning to open tomorrow but with heavy snow forcasted tonight any further closure information will be posted here.

One old geeza at my work rode his moped 10 miles in thick snow at 5am this morning, fell off it three times and got hit by a car to boot.....still came in and did a 12 hour shift.

Another old lad rode his pushbike 8 miles down the canal to get in to work and still had warmer hands than me, the guy who drove in with heated seats in a luxury car

Most of the roads hadnt been gritted when I drove up the M1 this morning but every single person got to work and did a full 12 hours in the warehouse and production side.........over half the office staff failed to make it in

Must be something in the water on our side......i didnt even consider not going in cos my gaffer (who looks like Tommy Hatchet) would have kicked my butt the next time i was in......lmao

Oh for a job where i can sleep when it snows

Nice tame debate going on here!

And, I'll stir things up, as usual, by saying that whilst there are a lot of valid points, there is one big one being completely missed : the climate has changed.

I'm 36, and like Tids, remember having weeks at a time off school, but that was simply because it was impossible to get there. Not that it was dangerous, or any other reason.

The conditions that have occurred recently were pretty much everyday weather (well, at least 50% of the time) from October through to March as recently as the 1980's, and everyone was geared up for it. These days, both logistically and financially, we're just not geared up for it.

In my line of work its really noticable. There used to be (in 1993) over 30 6 wheel drive dedicated snow ploughs here, now there is one, and there haven't been conditions (over 1 metre of snow) to merit the use of ploughs for 4 years.

Yet, when there is a little morning frost or a few inches of snow, we recieve more complaints from the public than we ever did before.

Then theres the flip-side, people are more and more living day-to-day. Ask yourself this - if you were to be stuck in your house now, without electricity, for 10 days, would you have any problems?

20 years ago, people didnt care if everything shut down, because it meant they could cozy in for a few days off, wheras now, people are panicing in case the run out of milk, bread, power etc...

Nail and head spring to mind!

I also feel like saying, it's all relative too.....

Mike hits on a point about people going in to work, even though there are dangers, one chap even falling of his mtorbike! Personally I wouldn't take the risk - I see my life as worth a lot more than that.

I can quite honestly say that I could live in my house for perhaps 5 days right from this moment now without any bother. With more notice I know I could do a straight 12 days, quite happily!!

I think people need to remember that different area's were hit harder than others. I'm actually quite shocked how bad the Midlands have been hit by snow. On Tuesday I struggled to get home because of ice, and now I'm thinking it'll be the same tomorrow - however I need to go college so might just take the risk, will see how bad it is!

(Anyone tried pushing a pushchair in the snow? Bloody good work-out I tell ya)

Spinner you seriously need to meet my mum hehe shes worlds worst panicker.

Whenenever theres a water crises out break of disease in some far off land. When bird flu came out she sheds up on food so that we can all survive lmao its all in the cupboard upstairs.

So no we wouldnt have problems although we are obviously in the minority.

I can agree with you with the weather conditions and were not prepared but i still think the attitudes are wrong. Life goes on regardless of theres snow or not.

Exactly the point about with the complaints rising.

In saying that research councils lost power so workers have an excuse there lol.

I was in the passengers seat yesterday my mum driving it was horrific you couldnt tell the slip way from the firstlane. Every now and again the tires would connect with the hard shoulder lorries were out of control.

Our council have decided they are only gritting the A roads tonight which is very irriating. Perhaps they should spend more time on gritting the blooming motorways!

Very much so.

Obviously, up here we are more used to snow and ice, and other places even moreso. Some are more experienced and have better suited vehicles to drive to work, some (like me) get called in during bad weather, whilst others, correctly, are advised to stay home.

All relative as you say.

I'm actually just in from work, we've had a few inches here since my last post and there were trucks and busses sticking here and there. All good fun!

Edit - Couldn't resist grabbing this from the BBC News "UK Snowfall Map" :

I have sensible walking shoes! You should see me amble past silly pedestrians as they slip in slide in their Nike's and Adidas trainers....

Although I did forget to put on sensible shows on Tuesday (Adidas ones instead) and ended up on my rear in front of a load of young ladies (whom I'd just taken over) lucky for me (and them) I was able to see the funny side...... especially as the chap in front of me had slipped just as I had!

What do you drive Spinner? I watched a Defender rip up a road the other day, was really funny, the driver was having so much fun!

The light and heavy looks the same on that map legend.......... (or is that the joke lol O.O)
