I just think england has been pathetic recently we have had a couple of days of snow and the country seems to of grinded to a halt.

Schools are closed across the country mine included and i really am needing my 6th form common room at the moment lol. I just think looking at countries such as finland, sweden, denmark and scotland who regulary have these weather conditions they continue as normal.

Its now a standing joke that:

"if germany invaded england while it was snowing they would of won the war"

Your thoughts?

First thing is, if Germany did invade only England when it was snowing, it would not have won them the war, might have helped a bit, but not won it for them, remember your not Britain, and most certainly not the world. I'm sure us Welsh and Scots would have ended up bailing you out..

As for the current situation, I think the media have just made a mountain out of a mole hill. It is very bad in some areas, and peoples health and safety come before anything else, and with the current economic situation, they have just jumped on the, OH my god, we are losing money because of this and the economy which has already collapsed is collapsing because of it bandwhagon, so the public sector is getting hit hard by the media and because of that, everyone else his having a pop. You gotta feel sorry for Gordon Brown when most of Britain are influenced by these idiots

When it snows as bad as it has, I wouldn't expect anything less from schools, they should be closed. Obviously going by pictures, my situation and word of others.

Yes if germany invaded us when it snowed in modern times they would win, but when i was a lad (and thats a long time after the war lol) we had heavier snow fall and we all plodded on to school regardless...it was part of the fun....so its a modern day problem, health and safety is far too prominent in our lives, heck they are saying kids shouldnt walk to school in case they slipped???
Their point being???
The pavements are in far worse condition when theres no snow.....its too much of a nanny state these days......how on earth did we cope before the Health and Safety reared its ugly head into our day to day life and our choices.
Heck i cycled 12 miles on untreated cycle paths/roads on Monday to work....no problem whatsoever, i just took that extra bit of care

It was just a saying about germany bit.

Why shouldnt kids go to school i mean if theres heating systems in place and roads and schools floors are gritted then why not?

If cars can drive so can buses

Well after my brain fart (Sorry again Alex)

That's a rather naive take on things, by you both, imo.

Tidnab, everything is broadcasted and brought to our attention alot more now, back in the day, there was probably more casualties, they just wern't pointed out, hence more care in health and safety. Maybe it is a bit petty in some cases, but overall I think it has turned out to be a good move.

Alex, It doesn't matter if cars are working, you wont find many people driving them, and that's what you need. The minority that are out and about, aint driving their usual way.

Buses could be carrying up to 50 people, I don't think the bus company want to give responsibilty to one particular person for all those people, and I dowt many people would fancy doing the same and catching a bus(same goes for all other transport).

Heating system, that has not got anything to do with the weather. It keeps you warm, I can just run up and down the stairs to keep me warm.

You might get to school, then the weather may take a turn for the worse, good luck getting home safely.
You got to look outside the box.

As for the countries you mentioned in your first post, that weather is what they are use to and it is not as dangerous as the wheather this country currently has. If you think logically, you will realise that when it snows there, it snows heavily and doesn't turn into black ice, and I dowt they rarely get drifts and blizzards. It's in-consistent over here if you like. And if they do get blizards and real bad ice etc... I don't think they get on with things normally

cant agree more

and no offence meant sporting but your only 18...ask your parents and they may share my opinion.
Also health and safety has its places in the work area but not to tell us what decisions we make in our personal life, sure there were more casualties those days, but that wasnt just the weather (christ im talking about the weather lol) cars werent as safe, but we drove better because of it....it just goes on and on, Unless its impossible to go due to real adverse weather then fine, BUT if its possible with care....then people should get there backsides out and get on with it.

Oxymoron?? (Or maybe a contradiction in thought, a litle conundrum even)

I love to hear people bang on about 'the good old days' when children weren't as bad as they are now ect ect! Codswallop!!!

I haven't the time to write a lovely laid out essay, like Sporting, however having read his comments, I'm in total agreance.

Nobody mentioned...well i didnt, 'the good old days' and i didnt refer to children being 'werent as bad as they are now', i merely stated we just got on with it.

Its a discussion board with a valid discussion, there is no need to knock down peoples opinions and slating them as Codswallop. Its a reasonable comparison in my opinion.

Scotland rofl

Near Glasgow, we get nothing but rain most of the year. The snow we've had this week wasn't much, it wasn't deep, and it only lasted a day. Not a speck of it yesterday.

Up in the North and the East they get more, Aberdeen usually gets about 2 days off for snow a year, but here near Glasgow, we're desperate for some

Anyway why complain, I'd do ANYTHING to get a day off right now! This is the toughest year for me at school, and it's like total hell

Well when you get to 16+ you actually begin to care about your education.

Im not being sarcastic everyones the same first couple of years. But ive got a lot of stress on me at the moment im doing 3 A levels and need them all to apply for my chosen university. This is not helped by the fact that i cant have access to resources to study and revise.

Think you're voicing the minority alex...

I'm sure if you ask the students of the thousands of schools shut, the majority would say they are glad to have a day off!

I mean, living near London, snow here is almost is rare! Give children the freedom to go and explore this alien phenomenon

Sure, with GCSEs and A level exams arriving soon, time is of the essence, but why's 2 or 3 days worth of time of any harm?

EDIT: Taking 12 or 13 GCSEs myself, but I dont care that much. It's easily made up in revision at home

I didn't knock down anyone's opinion, merely stated my own. I also pointed out that whilst someone is going on about how 'pathetic' and 'lazy' Britain is, he then in the next breath goes on to say they 'can't be bothered to give an answer' to a well structured reply, which to be quite honest annoys me, especially when they say they see the Country 'falling down the plughole' cause of people's attitude's!!!!!!!!

I took this as someone talking about the good old days............

And I fail to see how a pavement can be more dangerous without snow - which turns in to ice?!
I've just got back from school today and we've been told we might be off tomorrow as there has been another severe weather warning, this mihgt cause a large problem with black and frozen ice, which can be very dangerous for young children.
I totally get the big hoo haa about London, I thought it was bad buses not running ect, but schools have to make a decision based on the welfare of the children, very simple!
