Agree with that whole post basically lol. I must have watched American Beauty around the date of your post for the first time and sat staring at the t.v. open-mouthed for about 15 mins after it finished. Absolutely fantastic! And ditto to the recommended movie list (perhaps with the addition of scarface & casino!). Although not too sure about braveheart. Mind you, i miss most of the film due to there being tears in my eyes for the duration

Saw "American Beauty" about an hour ago for the first time, it's shot straight into my "Recommend to all who ask" list
Braveheart is still my fave film of all time but there's quite a few which I love, shawshank redemption mentioned above being one of them
Some others I'd recommend:
The Departed
28 Days Later (and the sequel, 28 weeks later)
The Last King of Scotland
A Beautiful Mind
Anchorman
Gladiator
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Shrek
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
And a few more which I cant think of at present

I did exactly the same! Even clapped it lol...sad yet true, and oddly needed.
Few more to add to that list...
Taxi Driver (De Niro in god-like form)
Heat
Memento
L.A. Confidential
The Usual Suspects
