I believe he had a reaction to medication to try and prevent the addiction, as opposed to any side effects of the drink.

No it isn't, I watched a documentary on it actually. He was a fashion icon back then, a little like Beckham aspires to be now. If people saw him in a club/pun whatever they'd buy him a drink and because he was such a nice person he'd always say yes to it and have a chat with them.
