Aflumpire, that is hippesville saying 'my opinion is gospel, there's no need to discuss it'
I'm saying if you feel that you shouldn't make suggestions about game play then you shouldn't be on the game queries thread. Please don't twist things because i called your analogy stupid because in my opinion it was.
You aren't placing a bet, this isn't bingo! rankings are there to show how good you are else there wouldn't be ranking tables would there?
As for the you place a bet on a footballer and he breaks a leg half way through the season?? It just has no relevance to the topic at all.

......and still it goes on!!!
have often heard 9 ball referred to as flukeball, and basically there's as much chance I'm sure of a hit and hope shot resulting in the 9 being potted as there is of a golden break. have you never fluked a win in 9 before????!!!!!
It's the nature of the game
really don't think there is any relevance to the continuation of this thread, so if you don't like it.....don't play it!
here endeth the lesson

A golden break is a rare event (even when it comes to 9ball), yes you can take a bit of a hit if it happens in a tournament against a low ranked player, but that is unlikely and (in my opinion) you should just congratulate your opponent for it, smile and get on with playing pool for fun.
Although a GB is ultimately a fluke, you can increase your chances for them by working on your break.
]If you really care about rank enough to moan over a few points lost on a rare occasion then maybe you should be picking who you play and not playing in tournaments...
As for what Hippes said-he responded to your suggestion, one that he feels wouldn't be beneficial, I don't feel you should tell someone to get off the thread for not having an opinion the same as yours.
As aflumpire said: For every gain, there must be a loss; thats how things are.
Again hippesville was the one saying nobody should have a different opinion than him if you read the posts and i really don't care enough to let it spoil my enjoyment but i don't agree with it so i put it up for discussion
People are supposed to discuss it not be so arrogant to say 'this doesn't need to be discussed because i'm right' as 'hippes' did.
As for you saying i shouldn't play tournaments that's all i play and i win my fair share! Rankings are secondary I just don't agree with losing points when you haven't had a shot....shouldn't you let me have an opinion?? Hypocritical

Yeah but most of the other things that we see as luck really aren't, if they leave the match ball in the pocket they deserve to lose their points same as if we do.
If we snooker ourselves or go in off that's down to losing position 90% of the time.
I don't agree with golden breaks in UK full stop because all the other rules are accurate.

well the 2 pot rule in straight isnt a rule either but it makes it more challenging, doesn't hurt to keep it surely, as 9 ball golden break is more lucky then the 2 8 ball games despite some can be planned.
i used to plan my golden breaks all the time, especially in UK.

Never seen anyone do it in 8 ball US to be honest but the UK one definitely seems more like a set way of landing one every now and again, makes for a more enjoyable contest without them though.
People have said I should learn how to do them, it's a fair point but I'd rather play the game and whoever is playing better that day wins not make it a lottery.

Actually, if you read Hippes post properly, it wasn't about opinion, he was stating that the fluke element of 9ball is part of the game-if you don't agree with someone benefiting from a fluke then you shouldn't play it due to it happening so often-actually not much to do with opinion, so its hardly arrogance on his part.
As for I what I said, that was my opinion (maybe I should have substituted 'one' for 'you' as I wasn't talking about you directly, but people in general) about if someone cares that much about rank it doesn't make sense to me that they choose to risk getting fluked out by someone of low rank in a tournament. Worrying about rank, especially when it gets to the stage when one moans about losing rank when they don't get a shot is (once again, my opinion) someone taking it way too seriously and forgetting this pool game is for fun.
And I think you'd find, luck plays a much larger part in the game than you may believe, you may suggest its skill, but from a break, you cannot get the balls to lie the same way twice, so luck automatically judges how close a game may be. A player might hit a shot-they cannot tell where it is going to go, they may have some idea, but if you play a shot (especially over distance with the balls tight to each other), how the balls roll is complete luck as your control is extremely limited. Losing points due to luck is in the nature of the game-whether its a fluked 1-9 combo or a skillful clearance.

Also, I never had a problem with your opinion, but you've now changed from it being a problem because you don't get a shot, to it being down to luck, to it being against the rules to it not showing who is playing the best...
Just an observation.
But to sum up, I believe GBing is part of this game and so it should continue to give points-the only time that that should change is if you remove their legality.

Again, two posts from what started out as a short one...

Exactly.
Don't lose sight of the importance of why they are there in the first place. If there was no reward for them the incentive to go for them would be all but removed.

dark angel- I read the post properly it says 'i don't see any relevance in the continuation of this thread, if you don't like it don't play it.'
Again you have classed it as 'moaning' and 'taking it too seriously' nothing to do with that I don't see why people should lose ranking points when they haven't had a shot so I posted the topic, if I cared about rankings that much I would play ranking games instead of only tournaments.
Strange comment that one they are all arguments as to why you shouldn't lose points from golden breaks and they all tie in.
Rankings are to show how well you are playing, if you don't get a shot and lose a game it is nothing to do with how you have played therefore you shouldn't lose rank.
Whether a golden break is luck or skill doesn't matter to me as I said the person who gets it should still get points.

Again I have said all along the one who gets the golden break should be rewarded but the person who has been on the receiving end shouldn't lose any.
The problem is you can lose 6/7 points in one hit and as I said earlier that's the same as 3 hard fought victories over similar ranked players just doesn't seem right to me.

I understand your overall point about losing rank points due to someone else taking one shot, but as I said earlier; for every gain there must be a loss.
It would be like not allowing aces to be served in tennis. Andy Roddick is known for his high Ace count during matches (when he is playing well). He can serve it at 220kp/h straight down the centre line and his opponent would have no chance in the world to return the ball, unless he stood in the middle of the baseline (and then Roddick would just serve it wide at 150kp/h for an easy Ace).
So do we take away those 30 or so Aces from Roddick and tell him that he would have to serve it so his opponents are still in the game? Of course not. You can argue that serving like that is not a fluke...but don't forget that there would probably be a few serves he would try to make the opponent play that go wide and just catch the line.
Difference between the scoring system in Tennis and the one here is that Funkypool has a floating ranking system and Tennis is a race to a certain amount of points to win games in the aim to win sets and matches. This means that Roddick's opponents (most who can't serve Aces as well as he can) have to work harder in their game to draw level. It's the same in Funkypool, you just have to work your points back.
So if you think of a Golden Break as an Ace, then we are all good...but I understand that this will not change your argument (and i'm not trying to, i'm just stating mine in different ways to help you understand my point).
If you wouldn't take Aces out of Tennis, why would you take GB's out of a fun pool game?

Yeah I do see the 'for every loss there must be a gain' part of the scoring system, did think why not just give a set 2pt gain for a golden break and (0.5) loss but that would might lead to the virtuosos getting to 1000.
Although I don't go for golden breaks I play a different way and I probably end up getting a lot of wins from people trying to get them and leaving the table well set so in that sense it evens out a bit.
Not a big fan of tennis but the player on the receiving end of an ace at least has the chance to return and the chance to serve themselves so I would compare it more to a penalty shoot out where first goal scores because if he bangs it in game over.
So still not totally convinced but I do take on board your points

.....in the end pretty much every game you play in life there is some form of luck involved.
you just gotta accept that fact, play and enjoy it.
