Don't see why you should lose ranking points when you haven't had a shot.
In tournaments you can lose 10 points from a couple against you the person who does the break should get points but you shouldn't lose any.

Or run outs? You don't get a shot there either....

I dug this up from the grave, so old is it that I was still appending 2000 after my name...

Did do a search but i agree with the point made that run outs are at least skillful, i don't mind losing points from a run out but golden breaks you definitely shouldn't.

I disagree.
You don't get a refund if you put a bet on the highest goal scorer at the start of a football season and the player suffers from a broken leg half way into the year and therefore you cannot win your bet. You also don't get a refund on a bet if a referee makes an error in the last minute of a soccer match and awards a penalty incorectly to the opposing team.
There are two players in each pool match. One wins and one loses. A ranked game is like placing a bet that you will win your match. If you are unlucky enough to have an opponent who knows how to pot a Golden Break, then you should just congratulate them and move on...or learn how to pot a Golden Break yourself

Rankings are supposed to reflect your skill level, that's the idea of them it's nothing to do with placing a bet and hoping to get lucky, that's just stupid!
When you lose a game to one you haven't done anything to warrant losing rank.
I play 8 ball UK in real life and there is no such thing as a golden break anyway, black goes down off the break and it's a rerack.

Nothing stupid about my point at all. An incorrect decision from a referee could cost a team placings on the standings, no matter how skillful or talented that team was on the day.
If you are a good player then letting go of some ranking points because of someone elses skill should not bother you at all. Golden Breaks add an element of risk/reward to the game. Remember, your opponent might leave the nine ball over the pocket for an easy win . If you are playing eight ball then it adds a new twist to the match .
For every gain, there must be a loss; thats how things are. The other alternative is to re-rack when a golden break occurs; but as I said that takes a whole element out of the game.

If there was no rank to be gained from a GB win then the main point of the GB would be lost.
As Nick said on that link above, luck evens itself out over time so thats how you have to look at things..

There is a significant difference between "real life pool" and Funkypool.
Losing to an opponent through a Golden Break, like what just happened to me moments ago, is all part of the game.
Im sure that if you won from a Golden Break, you wouldnt want to lose ranking points for that achievement!

GB's are basically flukes (imo - if someone can argue skill be my guest :p) So this to me is the same as..
'we shouldn't lose points if our opponent gets a bit of a flukey win'
I agree with Afl and co.

......and still it goes on!!!
have often heard 9 ball referred to as flukeball, and basically there's as much chance I'm sure of a hit and hope shot resulting in the 9 being potted as there is of a golden break. have you never fluked a win in 9 before????!!!!!
It's the nature of the game
really don't think there is any relevance to the continuation of this thread, so if you don't like it.....don't play it!
here endeth the lesson

That's to the 3 of you who couldn't read one sentence properly and hippesville in that situation you have actually played a game!
Course there is luck involved in every disipline especially 9 ball but it takes a long time to build up rankings and to lose the same without having a shot as you've just gained from beating 3 tough opponents of similar rank is wrong.
As for the relevance hippesville this thread says game queries i'm making a suggestion 'if you don't like it don't play it' means nobody should make any suggestions and the site doesn't improve. If that's your opinion get off the game queries thread!

A golden break is a rare event (even when it comes to 9ball), yes you can take a bit of a hit if it happens in a tournament against a low ranked player, but that is unlikely and (in my opinion) you should just congratulate your opponent for it, smile and get on with playing pool for fun.
Although a GB is ultimately a fluke, you can increase your chances for them by working on your break.
If you really care about rank enough to moan over a few points lost on a rare occasion then maybe you should be picking who you play and not playing in tournaments...
As for what Hippes said-he responded to your suggestion, one that he feels wouldn't be beneficial, I don't feel you should tell someone to get off the thread for not having an opinion the same as yours.

I had 9 characters remaining and it told me I was over by 7!
Anyway, my last point:
Read posts properly-only two misread your post, not 3.
(Only Spinner and Jim suggested that by what you said you don't get points for winning via a golden break).

golden breaks can be played for as well in US i had this break only i used after experimenting (before ball size got changed) and i was able to get it at least once each time i came online.
Once i even made 2 or 3 US golden breaks in a day.
but thats like saying i shouldnt lose rank because i got maxed by an opponent, doesn't matter if it was a close game or a runout break, the system is fine as it is

I beg to differ...
Please refrain from calling other peoples opinions and analogies 'stupid' and allow others to voice thier concerns and opinions without asking them to leave the forum.
