I think in conclusion snookering is a valid form of strategy to use, if some dont like it they dont have to play it but i wont let it stop me playing how i do.
I believe in adapting to every game, some i will pot some i will play more safe, i believe this sums up to my all round play and both go hand in hand.

If he hit no ball, that means a foul in all three pool formats here on FP, and a ball in hand for you, so no snooker applies to this scenario.
Whether I'd hand the shot back depends entirely on the situation (and frankly a bit on who I'm playing too), but more often than not I believe I would hand it back. No fun taking wins you didn't deserve, but none of that has got anything to do with snookering or not.

what if your opponent lagged on a shot hit no ball and left you and himself snookered, would you give it back or take on the next shot yourself?

That could be read the wrong way.... I'm sure you didn't mean to say it's somehow unsporting to play a snooker?
Rather you are saying the level of sportsmanship having nothing to do with snookers or no snookers, right?

But that's an argument far removed from tactically snookering your opponent in pool, to which sportsmanship applies not one bit.

Have you ever watched professional 9ball?
Snookers are a fundimental part of the game!
The fact is that in Snooker, it would take an awful lot of snookers to win a game without a single bal being potted. In pool, it only takes 3, so it is natural that snookers are a big part of pool.
Indeed, for the ideas expressed in this thread to be balanced, we should be seeing the same being said about people potting to win instead of snookering..
Fair enough I obviously havent watched enough of pool to have a valid opinion.
The games ive seen are pretty much break and clear or a miss and you lose.
But its nothing to do from the point your making.

Thats because in reality snookers are a much bigger part of the game snooker hence the name.
In reality pool if you miss one shot you basically lose the match snookers dont take place.

Yes, the second one I think I should have used the words "the argument for/against" in there somewhere...

In answer to the first post, if you ever watch an 8 ball UK game, you would know how tactical it is, and just how long 1 frame can take. I love snookering people, far more difficult than clearing the table, yet far more rewarding and realistic.

Exactly.
To expand on clooneman and janmb's posts above, I think a good summary is to say that whether you snooker or not is a matter of tactics.
Sportsmanship on the other hand is congratulating an opponent on a good shot whether it be a pot, snooker, or escape.
