Yup, and here's the scale of the ranking points involved in the games:

Game, Ranking Scale
8 Ball, 3.0
9 Ball, 3.5
8 Ball, UK 2.5
Killer, 3.5
Straight, 5.0

No-one will argue that straight is the most skillful game, and that the better player will nearly always win a game of it against a weaker player, because 35 balls have to be potted. As for 9 ball, which is in joint second place on that list, it can be one by potting one ball in the whole game, so its place there is unusual. I would place (US) 8 ball ahead of 9 ball for a start, and then maybe even drop 9 ball to 2.5. UK 8 ball ought to be 3.0. Killer is ok, perhaps.

Agreed with everything Clooneman said.

If theres one thing I've learned about Funkypool it is not to judge a player based on profile stats.

It is easier to get 900+ on 9 ball, however it isn't too difficult to get 900+ at the 8 balls also.

The difficult thing is trying to keep it at 900+, Everyone at 900+ will agree on this.

its harder to keep 900+ on 9 ball though

i got it and played someone of 822 rank and every frame you win gets 2 ranking points but every game you lose, you lose between 4 and 5.

with 8 ball you only lose 2 - 3.

Why is that?

due to the game ranking scale, and because your more "likely" to win so to speak

But it's the amount of the loss he means. Gandalf, how much do you gain in 8 ball for winning games?

the amount of loss is down to both players points, funkypool work it out without the basis of luck on someones side, meaning the person who is more likely to win will lose more points for a loss, where as if you beat someone who is apparently rather easy for you i.e a 900 vs a 600, the 600 will only lose a fraction of a point, if that makes any sense and helps?

9 Ball is a one ball game, fact.

Its the hardest game to be a 'virtuoso' at in my opinion because its a game where anyone can snatch a win from one shot, thus making it a lottery.

The 5 point loss for a 1/9 combination or vice versa is pretty annoying..

Not a fact, if it was a 1 ball game it would be called US 1 Ball, not US 9 Ball.

i see where strobe comes from, the only ball that matters is the 9, but yes there are 8 more, used for snookers and keeping your foe off the table, so it flicks both ways

sens15 824.0 (+4.9), gandalf 877.4 (-4.7)

surely 4.7 points is a bit extreme to be losing to someone of that rank

Isn't it because the stakes are higher??

The higher the rank, the higher the win/loss?

thats the point

in 8 ball the rank lost would be around 2.5 for the same match

True, and it's a lot of rank gained for a win in 9 ball as well, considering that 8 ball is unarguably the more skillful game.

Lol, well spotted, BUT...

When I said "8 ball is unarguably the more skillful game", I was talking about which was more skillful, it or 9 ball. That's why I said "more skillful" because I was referring to just the two games. Then when I described straight as the "most skillful" game, I meant most skillful out of the five games.

When comparing only two entities, use of the superlative is ungrammatical: if the group were to contain only AJ and Deniz, AJ would be older, while Deniz would be younger and it would be ungrammatical to say that AJ was the oldest.
