Wales were very lucky to qualify for the 1958 World Cup. Why was this?

Sudan and Israel were originally drawn in the same Group, but Sudan refused to play Israel. Israel would have automatically qualified but FIFA brought in a rule stating that no team could qualify without playing at least one game.
This meant that Israel had to play a play-off with a runner-up from the UEFA Zone. Belgium were initially asked but refused, meaning that Wales had to take part in the play-off, which was two games, home and away.
Wales won both games 2-0.

As Brazil and Chile play this week, here is a question about a previous match between the teams.
What happened in a qualifying match for the 1980 World Cup, which was played between Brazil and Chile, and led to Chile being banned for the World Cup?

You mean 1990...? The Chilean goalkeeper feigned injury, I think Rojas was his name, and he got banned for life for his troubles, although I think they eventually rescinded his ban after a few years. A flare had been thrown onto the pitch.

sorry, i meant 1990.
After the flare was thrown onto the pitch Rojas faked injury by cutting his face with a razor blade which he had hidden in his gloves.
Your go Cloone

Ok, what natural event took place in 1960 to possibly jeopardise the 1962 World Cup?

In 1960 Chile, the hosts for the 1962 World Cup, was hit by a massive earthquake which measured 9.5 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake caused enormous damage to their infrastructure, meaning that they would have to rebuild everything from roads to stadia.
Fortunatly they managed to do this and the tournament started on schedule, without any major flaws.

The Chilean earthquake is correct, and it's the largest earthquake ever apparently. Your go

Who was the first player ever to be red-carded during a World Cup match?

Placido Galindo, Peru vs Romania, 1930. Although he didn't receive a red card as they didn't have them then...
Carlos Caszely, Chile vs West Germany, 1974. Red cards were introduced for the 1970 competition but no-one got sent off then.

Two for the price of one, answer either one correct and I'll give you it.
A) What name connects the 1966 World Cup final and the football team FC Baku?
or
B) What names connects the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 and a former judge from Halifax who is now a tabloid columnist?

The FK Baku stadium is called Tofig Bakhramo Stadium, which is named after the linesman who awarded England "that goal" against West Germany at the 1966 World Cup.
The judge was the owner of Pickles the dog, who found the trophy while out for a walk in a park. The trophy was stolen from an exhibition in London
