Yep, the New Model Army defeated the Royalist army of King Charles I in 1645 in one of the key battles of the Civil War. He ended up causing a second civil war and got himself beheaded for treason in 1649.

Your go

It was not Brazil. Bit of a hint: the qualification involved playing one or more qualification games as opposed to a qualification opponent pulling out, as happened with Brazil when Peru withdrew.

Edit: Just saw your changed answer. USA is correct, and so is 3 days. They submitted their entry late, so a one-off game was arranged for May 24 1934 to be played in Rome with the United States won 4-2 thanks to four goals from Aldo Donelli. 3 days later the tournament kicked off, and the Americans got tanked 7-1 by hosts Italy. Donelli scored, becoming the last American player to score in Italy for 58 years (when Paul Caligiuri scored in their 5-1 defeat by Czechoslovakia).

cmurphy, your go

A pool question now:

In the USA the act of applying spin to the cue ball is commonly known as "Putting English On".

Where did this term originate from?

No? That's what I got... The only other thing I could find is the comparison with body English (i.e. body language, the gestures we make that give away our feelings), and putting body English onto a billiard ball eventually eroded simply to the term english, usually with a small e.

Hmm didn't realise there were different explanations. The one I found (and also heard mention before in a pub) was this:

In the early 1800's an Englishman named Jack Carr, in the USA, found that chalking the tip of the cue prevented it from slipping and mis-cueing.

He also discovered that he could cause amazing effects on the cue ball's behaviour by putting a side-spin on it.

He travelled around demonstrating this effect (and selling 'magical' chalk) and it became known as the English effect

Just had another look at google and body english is mentioned more often. So it's only fair that I give you that one.

Your go Cloone

Who scored 4 goals in a match in the 1938 FIFA World Cup and still ended up on the losing team?

Wilimowski, who played for Poland, scored on 53, 59, 89 and 118 minutes.

The score, after Extra Time was Brazil 6 - 5 Poland

Hmmm.

As for Williamowski, correct, and I'm not sure that any other team has lost a World Cup game after scoring 5 goals, although I might be wrong. Your go cmurphy

Which country only entered the World Cup in 1930 after their king intervened and personally picked the team?
