Why does everyone want to give them selves a label?

My answer comes from society, from 2 we are taught gender labelling, which then leads onto more lablelling, but don't you just find it a bit ridiculous? I listen to rap, does that make me a violent curser? I also listen to rock/indie/metal! As well as George Micheal. Does this really mean i'm going to hell?

And i really detest when people bang on about 'i don't listen to any of that industrial crap.' What happens when the band you was listening to makes it big in the world, do you stop liking them?

I agree with most of what you said there 1_eye.

I'm assuming that last bit was aimed at me though, and i suspect it was a misinterpretation. I wasn't meaning industrial as in the commercial sense, rather the metal subgenre involving the use of samples, sound effects and processed vocals that is often wrongly confused with goth rock/metal. It's pretencious rubbish that does nothing other than try to conform to a teen stereotype, probably at the request of the music industry bigwigs. Or at least that's the way I see it. Goth isn't great either IMO, but I do respect it more as a subgenre. Gothic (not goth), from time to time, I quite enjoy.

As for still liking bands that make it big, it depends HOW they make it. If they play what they want to and just happen to sell records, that's fine. Selling-out and changing their style to what the record companies say will sell however, almost ALWAYS results in a massive drop in quality. In that case, I just don't buy the new stuff.

Oh yeah, I'm a massive fan of Judas Priest. I also quite like Iron Maiden. I don't think metal gets too much bigger than that.

I also wasn't giving myself a label. If I was, I'm certainly not a goth.

It would still be interesting to see how many people can actually name a few goth metal bands and a few gothic metal bands though. Just to see what everyone's basing their opinions on.

Wasn't actually aimed at you m8! Was aimed more towards my brother who bangs on about commercialism and what not. Totally get what you mean, however i have little or no contact with media/comics (the sun etc) and only really watch BBC news, so i hear a song and like or dislike it! I get DVD's with loads of music on them and just skitt through them to see what i can find............tis' how i like the automatics boy kill boy and many other mainstream acts!

Would Cradle and Mortis count in your little challenge?
I like all types of music, literally. Ask Dave.

Mortiis are one of those industrial bands I was talking about that often get labelled (wrongly) as goth. I can see why it gets confusing though. Most stereotypical 'goths' listen to a lot of industrial, and actually very little goth or gothic.

Cradle started out as a symphonic black metal band, although more recently they have shown a lot of gothic (not goth) influence. They aren't a great example, but I can just about accept them.

Anyone else got anything for me?

I'll post some goth and gothic links soon. They are actually pretty distinct, and gothic in particular is far from 'just screaming in a mic'.

Ahh, what the hell. For anyone who's interested (though I suspect not many), I'll post some examples now.

GOTH:

http://www.myspace.com/tenebregoth
http://www.myspace.com/thebronxcasketco
http://www.myspace.com/sistersofmercy13
http://www.myspace.com/entwinemetal

GOTHIC:
These bands usually feature an angelic female lead vocalist backed by harsher, deeper male vocals. There tends to be a more orchestral feel compared to goth bands.

http://www.myspace.com/draconianmusic
http://www.myspace.com/tristania
http://www.myspace.com/silentiumband

Confusion over (I hope).

For the most part, the GOOD one's make it.. its all waffle!!

The same guy's love nirvana and Led zeppelin and claim they were all about the music! (I like them to, but they liked the money, no denying that!)

Oooo... Zeppelin have been mentioned. Now I've got an excuse to point out that they stole quite a bit of their music/lyrics from other bands. e.g. the main guitar line from 'Stairway To Heaven' is the same as the one from 'Taurus' by Spirit.
