Go to Tools/Options, then click the content Tab.

There should be a box there to select your popup blocker.

If in IE, if you install the google toolbar, it takes over blocking popups, so if you un-install it the built in blocker is disabled unless you re-install. So if thats what you did, you may have to reinstall FF.

Right here's a link to the latest AVG antivirus. Its completely free and excellent :

http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_446a965.exe

WinSoftwareCorp is an infuriating malware site. Nothing to worry about as long as you dont download from it!

Downloading the latest updates for your computer would be wise, as they will include microsofts Malware removal tool (runs on its own, dont worry) which should also help.

(from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ )

If you still have problems, the best to get Windows Defender (anti-spyware) as well to scan your system : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134

Hope some of that helps!

Nice one spinner, was just about to come here and post that my norton anti virus runs out in 30 days and i was wondering if there was any free ones rather than having to pay!

Would it be wise to use one of these free ones or should i stick to morton and pay?

(disclaimer - these comments are purely my own opinion)

I have more than once had to install AVG to clean up computers at work which the full Corporate edition of Norton has failed to protect.

So yes, I would advise ditching Norton.

spinner, i've got another question. so i've started to run the avg computer scan thing...so far the the scan has been going for over 10 hours...how long can i expect this scan to take, it hasn't found any threats so far... i'd like to use my computer sometime in the next year..is it normal for this scan to take so long??

No. thats not normal at all..

Its awkward to give the right advice with this kind of thing, but first thing i'd do is re-boot.

Hopefully that should clear things out and let AVG work properly.

Are you getting any popups?

nope i'm not getting any pop ups while the scan is running, i've left the computer alone completely that way i'm not using up any more cpu than needed. its been 12 hours now and 183,000 some files have been scanned and its still going strong. what worries me is its still in the C:/ driver or w/e thats called... are you sure i should reboot, cuz i'd hate to have to wait another 12 hours during a repeat scan

well its been over 12 hours so i'm just gonna reboot and see what happens...

Do you use Ad-aware as well?
My Norton has been bulletproof so far during its life, but AVG is the way to go.
How big is your hard-drive and what CPU are you running?

hmm well you see, i'm not really good with computers..so i don't know...

edit: so i've found these numbers, i think this is what you were asking for:

CPU 2.66 GHz, 2.67 GHz, 248 MB of RAM

and to redeem myself i do study organic chemistry and calculus... i just can't figure out computers.

Haven't caught you online Brighteyes, but i hope the re-boot helped.

If suspect you have some kind of malware (adware and/or spyware) on your system, since Firefox is very insecure against these things especially from pages like the one you posted.

If you haven't tried the other two links, i suggest doing that now.

We'll beat it yet!

when's the last time you re-installed windows?
On a well used computer it should be done at the very least every 12 months reallistically 6 is optimum.

When you do it you get a fresh start and your computer runs at the same speeds it did out of the box.
Everyday usage clutters your computer with all sorts of things. An issue like the one your having should really just be seen as an incentive to re-install.

Back up all your important files on something external. dvd's are handy as they'll store near 5 gb's. cd's will do or an external hard drive.

Get the back-up disk that came with your comp and pop it in. Restart and it should boot into it, otherwise restart again, press F8 and 'boot from cd-rom'

The instructions are normally on the disc's sleeve anyway.

Hope that helps

Well, as of right now, i've ran the disk clean up, a disk defragmenter, and got a virus scan program thingie. right now the computer seems to be working well so i'm hoping this was the trick..

magic that sounds like it'd be a job for someone who knew what they were doing, i'd rather not mess with anything that major, i don't trust myself.

thanks for all your help, hopefully all that was the trick

Actually it's really really straight forward and it fixes ALL your problems without any annoying scans.

My personal approach would be to download linux, no virii no adware/spyware/annoying gates...
But hey each to his own!

Magic - i really must querie you as to where you got that reinstall idea from!

I've never done that in all my years except to upgrade or in the event of hardware failure.

A properly maintained system with reliable software installed will run along just fine, as Brighteyes will now have found out.

However, i'll take over now with the questions.

I've tried a few linux GUI's, but i cant get any to recognise either a serial or USB mouse. Not the greatest start!

Any ideas?
