Regarding Joes granny - exactly!

And that why Vista Home is the best OS currently availiable to her. Maximum peripheral support and, if she wants, it can warn her at every point she may do something to alter system operation.

"Straight out of the box" is where OSX.xx and especially Linux fail miserably.

A ssytem doesn't just have to be secure by its nature, it must also be usable

I know this is way too off-topic already, but i'd love to hear your definition of a one-day attack without user involvement.

User account protection is one of those features that could have been great, but fails. Microsoft went way overboard with this, to the point where 'annoying' and 'frustrating' are the most appropriate words to describe it. I mean, why should deleting an shortcut icon from the desktop warrant an access denied box followed by another security window? And why should you need to go through the same drawn out process repetedly every time you want to carry out a certain procedure? Surely just the first time is enough. With anything even remotely complex you can be clicking 'allow' boxes until your finger drops off. So much for useable.

Again. Decent OS, but comes with a few headaches.

You've obviously only seen an early Beta. All confirmations are now one time only unless you specifically want to be warned each time.

And remember, if you think you know it all, then it can be turned off completely at any time

Supposed to be, but it doesn't always happen like that.

Most users probably don't know this, and those that aren't aware it can be changed are highly unlikely to be deleting/changing anything vital to the system anyway. The general feeling among people I know (myself included) is, being stupidly sensitive, it's little more than an annoyance. And let's face it, any user daft enough to change/delete anything they don't understand, deserves whatever consequences they face.

I have seen reviews on it and its not realiable and it has grey areas in the system.I advice that you dont get vista unless you really need to

Just got the 90 day Report for Vista, certainly looking ok (warning - RedHat users may want to look away now!):

Vista was a pain for me. Firstly there were compatibility issues with existing software. Then there were driver issues as it isnt well established so not everyone caters for it. Then theres the fact that it GUZZLES memory, it was spiking 50% use when it was idle. Also, its not very network friendly so for those who use Wan/Lan its a bit of hassle navigating around the network. Oh and I nearly forgot it doesnt use outlook express anymore so I couldnt transfer my current emails over. To be honest the only user friendly thing about it was it didnt complain when I reinstalled XP Pro. However, it was very pretty

Everything Dom said is correct... except:

"To be honest the only user friendly thing about it was it didnt complain when I reinstalled XP Pro"

*You* reinstalled it ?

Why do people go and rush out to install the latest operating system????????????????

Leave it for 12-18 months first and let any problems that happen get sorted out, Its the same with messenger live when it first came out........dont be foolhardy thinking everything works A1 for everyone (messenger live is now fine.....for me anyway)

And Vista is memory hungry, so make sure you get enough to handle it.
I been on XP for 3 and a half years now, i dont plan to upgrade for at least 12 months.

As the saying goes.......Only Fools Rush In

I agree tidnab, I installed the Eval on a dodgy old laptop to have a look at it, Dom decided she liked all the "shiney Pretty" things so insisted I install it for her, I think it lasted about 3 days before she wanted XP Pro Back.

Yes I want shiny things and I want them NOW! *throws a wobbly*

Atleast I gave it a go so when all the hiccups are sorted I'll have a rough idea of what to expect. Can't comment on something you haven't tried

Thats fine..........
Personally i wont get sucked into 'consumer hype' about the 'new piece of kit'..... i dont feel i need the latest gadget or software right now.......
So let the boffins sort it out and i can have stress free life, and when they have 'ironed out the glinches', i might.....just might get vista, until then, ill keep XP, its served me well so far

I agree with you, Vista isn't a "must have" upgrade like some try to sell it.

If you have a high spec new machine, then by all means give it a go. But if you have old software or hardware then why bother.

Its like buying a PS3 to play PS1 games - it wont work, and whats the point anyway!

Work is moving over to Vista now for the obvious security reasons, but it will only be installed on new machines.

people rushing out to buy 'the latest gadget' either it being vista or a games console.
The topic digressed slightly but the general idea was there
