I am having 'issues' with my media player which i have found to be the most unreliable program i have ever downloaded.
therefore i am just wanting any suggestions on any different "free" downloadable music player programs (itunes aside)

What media player do you use? I have itunes now, but use to use windows media player, the latest version which i think is 7 or 8, can't be totally sure.
You could try nero or quick time player which are all free to download, although i don't actually think nero is free.

I highly reccomend Microsofts Media Player 11.
I always used Winamp (free from http://www.winamp.com ) up till now, great control over every aspect, and some awesome plugins. Still the best for non-XP/Vista machines.
However MP11 takes all the good features and adds the best CD-ripping app and a simply awesome auto cataloging system so its won me over at last!
(Edit - if you have iTunes - get rid of it ASAP! Has caused nothing but problems in my experience due to serious compatability isues. It could very well be the reason your old program isnt working)

I dont use windows media either. MP11 can be set to use any format you like, so i have mine set to high quality mp3.
I'd never dream of using anything other than proper authoring software for burning CD/DVD though. Media players just dont offer the control.

Damn PC's deciding they don't like you, really pees me off! Also itunes is annoying, it decides your to stupid to make a decision and know what you want so trys to do everything for you! Cause you'd really want to import all 2476 songs onto your ipod nano wouldn't you! And the computer wonders why it gets shoved in the cupboard and fed pins!

Hmmm... never known iTunes compatibility problems before spinner. It does skip quite regularly though and it's definately not a program I'd recommend. WMP 11 is fine... unless you wan't to play files stored on an external HDD. It can be a bit temperamental about letting you do that. Nero is a great program, and I also like SonicStage CP (available free from Sony website), although a few people might disagree with me there. There are problems with early versions (v1.x), but I've had no problems with v2.3 onwards. I'm currently using v4.2 and it's serving me just fine.

Just shows you how things differ, iTunes is considered pretty much a virus by many of us! But aside from its bloatware issues, its the fact i've never got it to work with a single media player that really bugs me. Sure, it might work with an iPod, but who'd wanna been seen in public with one of those things?!?
Can't see why you have a problem playing files off an external HD with MP11. I do this all the time as i use a lot of different machines at work and carry my personal files with me. I'd suggest you're having iTunes confliction issues yourself

It's when you add external files to the WMP library and then remove the HD you get the problem. When you plug it back in and try to play songs in the library, half the time it can't find the file location. It's only a minor problem but it's just a hassle to then go into the HD files and select the songs to play from there. I've never had the same problem with SonicStage so I tend to use that more now.
