The avian flu which killed 2,600 turkeys at a Suffolk farm has been confirmed as the H5N1 virus.
That strain can be fatal if it is passed on to humans but experts said the outbreak was being contained and posed little danger to people.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the European Commission carried out virus tests at laboratories in Weybridge, Surrey.

The 159,000 other turkeys on the farm will now have to be slaughtered.

A three-kilometre protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone will be set up around Holton, which is approximately 27km south-west of Lowestoft.

Had to edit my post after your edit!

Yeah, seriosuly, its been all over the news.

Thank heaven its Turkeys which cant fly (though that dont prevent other birds flying in and out of course), but then Sky was reporting earlier that previous versions of that strain were transferable to humans..

Good point that! Time for someone to give Jade a ring to come and get her next script.

Why should anyone care about H5N1? You can't get it from eating infected birds, as cooking destroys the virus, and it isn't transmitted from human to human (unless it mutates into a strain that is contagious, but that might never happen). Just stay away from poultry farms and you're safe. Simple.

Yeah, i wondered this...

Anyway, i think the media overrate the problem to a certain extent. Obviously if the virus was to mutate into a form that is passed on from human to human then that would pose a widespread problem. However, shouldn't we cross that bridge when we come to it?

It may not ever happen and you can't keep restrictions in place forever can you?

In my opinion, i think any form of the virus can be found in certain poultry farms across the world, only the factories and large farms actually get checked for it.

Over in ireland, i have some poultry (between 30-40) and i get letters in every month suggesting this and that. Even had to register them to the county councel when the first alerts came out. Whatever the restrictions, it will come along sometime or other.
