1 - avg antivirus
2 - Shouldn't be needed if you're sensible but Microsoft Defender is by far the best
Both are free and miles better than anything you will pay for.
As for ubuntu, sure, you will never have any problems with viruses of spyware running on it...
... but then again practically nothing atall wil run on it so its a kinda moot point!
In defense of Linux, if you dont wanna have your MBR destroyed but wanna try it, just install it to a CDRW or preferably USB drive. This lets you try it safely first before commiting.
Nice simply method for USB here : http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2006/03/25/putting-damn-small-linux-dsl-on-usb/

I'd recommend DSL, Short for 'damn small linux' only 50mb, but only to test, quite pointless after that. More basic than you will need unless your computer's from the 80's! You can order free Ubuntu cd's from their website or burn onto a blank cd. This is a 'live' cd, you can boot of it and test everything is stable before installing it. It isn't installed o the cd however, that would be impossible, it simply extracts itself temporarily. This does mean it runs a lot slower than the real thing but as I said it's great for testing.
Spinner your a nice guy I like ya, but ... but then again practically nothing atall wil run on it so its a kinda moot point!
Thats is a narrow minded joke!! How could you say that??? Apparently you've never used linux. You can stretch your head all you like but there is not one microsoft product or compatible program which will not run on Ubuntu, or most other modern distributions.

LOL i ws only making a joke Magic.
I have plenty, indeed too much, experience of linux. Usually having to try to repair MBR's after people "trying it out"!
I do have a lot more experience of command line Unix, and back in the day certainly it was the way to go, but these days Microsoft software simply works. Period. Believe me, thats the only reason i reccomend it!
The fact is that OEM versions of XP are so cheap that you are better off going for a slightly lower spec machine and having it pre-installed than "saving money" going for a linux box.
I'm all for people learning the "gory details", but comparing windows where you just pplug in a netowrk card and cable and it all sets itself up, to the faffing involved with linux et al, kinda proves counteractive.
Not so much reinventing the wheel as reverting to the wheelbarrow!

Well at least you were kidding about that line. I accept that linux isn't for the people who don't want to dive in and learn something new. It is a great experience and skill to have though. Unix is still great server software and microsoft is a scham!
