By the way, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 was begun in 1818 and completed in 1824. The scherzo referred to is th esecon movement, and the theme for this scherzo can be traced back to a fugue written in 1815. When he premiered it, he got five ovations. This was almost indecent - someone as low-classed as a musician getting five ovations whereas the imperial couple were customarily greeted with three ovations at their entrance in the hall. The cops had to put a stop to all this spontaneous applause.

And best of all... Beethoven was completely deaf when he composed it.
