Hey i loved using cakewalk!

All i can suggest is going into the soundcard's properties and making sure the midi isnt muted or lowered to the minimum.

no i set it all up and checked everything was in order. i got 2 sound cards going off at the mo because the sound comes out of the moniter. I've gone into the midi devices bit on cakewalk but there aren't many coming up. only inputs - mpu-401 and outputs mpu-401 and microsoft midimapper.

just had a thought, would it help if i installed creative on my computer? thats what i had upstairs. it might have been a creative soundcard though. im not going near it after the sizzling and smoke of last nights efforts.

Ah. Yes installng the creative drivers for the card would be essential if its the same sound card, since the basic windows drivers dont handle proper midi functions too well...

First thing that springs to mind would be to check the web for updates to cakewalk.

Just before we go any further, have you seen/tried this?
