Probably been brought up before but i feel the need to ask.
Why are so many people getting byes in the first round of the tournie.
Can this not be sorted?

Its to even out the remaining rounds dude..
it has to work down to 2, for example 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2
So obviously if only 20 people enter, you need 12 byes to even up the next round...

lol quite right,
If there are 2 dq's in a round (in one game) then you can expect more byes in the next round
I think

Dear oh dear spinner, you would need 4 byes.
Thought i'd point out a rare spinner mistake guys!

I think Spinner is actually right there mr_mcquiston.
If you had 4 byes like you mention (from 20) it would leave 16 players (or 8 matches) of which 8 players would go through to the next round. Add the 8 to the 4 byes you mention and it makes 12 players for the next round...then 6...then 3!
Spinners 12 byes would leave 4 games, of which 4 players would go through. Add the 4 to the 12 byes and we're on the right track with 16 players…8 players…4 players…final!
Does that make sense?

Ok pool_life, you totally lost me there.
Think bout it. 4-20=16. 16 then 8, 4, 2.
Sounds more simple to me

'4-20=16. 16 then 8, 4, 2'
16 then 8? At which point do the 4 byes you mention come back into the tournament?

pool_life makes sense =O
with 20 players - 4 byes leave 16 players to play, of which 8 go through to the next round after the matches.....this makes 12 in the next round (4 byes and 8 winners)....to even it out you would then need 4 byes again to put 4 through, and leave 8 matches of which 4 go through to make 8 in next round and then it is sorted, whereas 12 byes makes the round after have 16 players straightaway, making your suggestion of 4 byes a worse route and therefore essentially flawed
EDIT : Spinners 12 byes lets 12 through and leaves 4 matches ( 8 players) of which 4 go through and the next round therefore has 16, i basically repeated pool life but hey

Correct!
To put the 4 byes back in a later round would mean 2 rounds of 8 players back to back as you could only put them in when 4 players go through.
Your way would do this:
4 players waiting to play after a bye.
16 play the first round and leave 8 players.
8 play the second round and leave 4 players.
You could put them back in here, but then we have the back to back rounds of 8 players i mentioned. The whole point is to even as soon as possible, and each round must be minus the amount of players from the previous round.
