'Scon' sounds ludicrously posh. 'Scone' doesn't.
Don't believe me? Well lets try it. Go, put on your best thick Lancrastrian, Mancunian or Yorkshire accent. Or maybe a West Country one. Or Brummie. Done it? Good.
Now try saying 'scon', then 'scone'. Which sounds poshest? It's the former, every time.
Indeed you'll quickly find out that 'scon' sounds absolutely, mind-bendingly stupid said in these accents.
Not convinced? Pah. Still, why take it from me when you can take it from a published anthropologist!
I am of course talking about Kate Fox, publisher of Watching the English, who, in Chapter 4 (Linguistic Class Codes) proclaims...
'Tea' for the higher classes, is taken at around four o'clock, and consists of tea and cakes or scones (which they pronounce with a short 'o').
Yes, that's right. The upper class pronounce it 'scon'. And if that doesn't make it posh, I don't know what does.
Don't believe Kate Fox? Pah. Philistine. Guess we'll have to take a different tack...
So, have you considered all the nice words that rhyme with 'scone'?
I mean, there's bone. They help keep us together. Then there's hone. And Gnome. And phone! Ah yes, and dome. Even a millennium one. And home. Ah, I like home. I especially like it's tone.
And zone! I'm definitely in the scone zone...

In contrast, lets look at all the nasty, horrible, evil words that rhyme with 'scon'.
Gone (yep you're alone).
None (there's no one there to help you...)
Swan (they'll break your arms with their wings if you're not careful)
Need any other reasons? Still not convinced?
Well how about the bluntness of the Scon pronunciation?
A Scone is a piece a beauty - a joy and a delight to eat. A nice scone covered in butter, maybe some jam, with perhaps even some clotted cream, is a joy unto itself.
On the other hand, a Scon sounds blunt, hard, harsh and generally dull and boring. The kind of thing that sums up images of gravel and concrete. Not tasty at all.
If that doesn't win it i don't know what does.
