oriental music is usually based around the pentatonic scale, so ensure you try to stick to that, obviously use traditional intruments and the best tip of all is dont indulge yourself, you obviously dont have the heritage or the knowledge of the style, so make it as simple as possible using less instruments and using space well, slow scale build ups and atmospheric, but not cheesy atmospheric. a good analogy is use the intruments to whisper the music, not to shout it, it aint rock and roll. hope this helps

I play guitar, I'm worrying cuz tomorrow I've gotta perform "Steve Vai - Tender Surrender" in a tsunami appeal concert, its the first time I've ever done an instrumental, so it should be good. I've performed loads, in bands and on my own, but this is my first instrumental.
I've been playing for about 7 years now and I'd like to think I'm pretty good.

What gear y'all got?

i got 2 gibsons, a gibson les paul standard and a gibson thunderbird IV Bass. A tanglewood semi acoustic guitar a Fender Telecaster (not very good) my amp is just a marshall dsp 50 for home studio use and a smal trace elliot bas amp, i dont gig. i run cubase sx/halion/nuendo with a yamaha sound setup = sw1000xg, ds2416, ax44, ax16at, (all soundcards out to a yamaha dsp amplifier to yamaha ns10 monitors.

that ll do for now, thats just my gear at home, when i work out of home i have allsorts on studio eqpt

thanks for the tips phase, im going to use a guitar a bass and any percussion instruments i can beg borrow or steal, i have 0 money to use for it, and i thought i should stick to the instruments i know, i might play a spanish lute as well, as it sounds quite oriental when playing pentatonic scales

triangl, triangle get it? ive recently taken up electric bass (as opposed to double bass which is strung the same) and i play in a jazz band and the band leader knows of my heavy metal musical background and constantly has to stop rehearsals cos i play too loud, and im not talking about amplification i pluck too hard and do long notes as trills and such
