OK, let me clear up a few things.
1. When it is your shot the game waits for you to make the mouse action to get your shot power and shot aim. Sometimes when your computer is busy (eg when an advert loads, or when you load another programme) the shot power is set to 0. This is what you call "lag", but this is a bug, I will look into it, and I think I know a way to solve it in about 90% of cases.
2. After you have played the shot the balls animate, ie move around the table. The alternative animation mode basically changed the frames per second (FPS) calculation.
Therefore the animation mode is nothing to do with the lag, and nothing to do with how the shot is taken, or how well you play.

The balls must move the same distance for the same power regardless of which animation mode was used (else when people using different animation modes and play each other the games would be out of synch).
Can you tell me about your PC? Which Java version are you using (you can check by clicking the options button)? Which Operating System do you use (you can check by clicking the Start button)?

Maybe it's an illusion because of the blurred effect.
I sometimes get lag when I've tried to load a DVD. When I've quit the programme and taken it away, the game is still slow and stuff..

The balls move the same distance regardless of the animation mode used. At about the same time as the animation mode was removed the maximum power was increased, which would have meant it was slightly more difficult to control the cue balls at slower speeds.
Yep gav, you're correct, other programmes can affect the animation, Java is not the quickest at animating so it requires a high percentage of the processor usage. Note that after playing a few shots the frame rate adjusts according to how busy/fast your PC is.
