Not sure if it's just me....but losing ranking points when the opponent golden breaks or runs out isn't exactly fair?? That's like saying you don't even get a chance in the game but it's your fault you lost.....

Might not look fair but you would be happy if you had a golden break/run out and you got those points for doing it.
Run out is fair though
Why do people only make these threads when they lose points to a golden break though? Rank is boring and you will soon see that it doesnt matter mate especially now with so many multi accounts going around.

Very true, although I do agree with the winner gaining points, the loser shouldn't have to, as it was pointed out in the thread i attached, you don't even get a shot, so why should you lose points?
I know points are only there to give a rough idea of the players ability, and for those lucky ones to achieve the Number 1 status, but it can still be annoying when someone GB's you.

It annoys anyone when you get GB'd against... but i'm guessing that maverick got gb'd or ran out against just seconds/minutes before he made this thread? When it hasn't happened to you in a while, you dont even think about it, so it's not really that big an issue... Essentially i think you're just a bit bitter about being GB'd against.
As for runouts, they actually require skill. So obviously you deserve to lose points and your opponent gain points.

As it happens Gary, i was just GB'd against in the micro 8uk final. But it's down to luck not skill when it comes to getting a GB. I didn't think you took points off the player you beat, thought they were just awarded/deducted (as the points never correlate) Not bitter about it, but when a 600 something does it to you and you lose nearly 5 points over it down to a bit of luck, it's a tad deflating
As for run outs, yes they take skill and the player who's done it deserves points, but if you didn't take a shot, how is that down to you for losing?

The moment you click play you accept 'whatever fate happens', GB's are very rare, runouts more often but yes they do most the time require precision positioning and to a certain extent a little luck.
I think points deducted for you not taking a shot is acceptable, the break is chosen at random so 50/50.

If you go out to a pool hall and pay £5 to enter a tournament, your opponent in the final runs you out in the deciding frame to take away lets say £500 in prize money, do you deserve some of that to as you never had a shot in that deciding frame? No you don't.
If you run out soon and take points off someone you won't sit there and say all of this. It is the price you pay for playing (even worse in a tournament as you do lose double points but can gain double). It is simple really mate, if you don't want to lose lots then play normal rank (have fun waiting to get a game though )

He's not asking for part of the micro tourny win! lol
not asking to not have lost the game.
Should definately still lose the game/tourn. But I agree, it would be nice if your rank wasn't punished, or maybe not punished as much as if you'd had a shot.

Everyone goes by the same rules, losing points does not bother me and many other people. You lose you lose rank, that is the gamble with micro's and normal tournaments.

I agree with Jay on this!
Not sure if this has been mentioned or even possible but cant all ranked games/tournys be scraped and work out your ability on win/loss ratio?.........think that would show how good a player you are overall

Sounds like everyone against this idea is someone uninterested in rank. That being the case, why do you care?
Some of us are interested in our ranks, let us have our fun!

Golden breaks are not just down to luck at all, there is some skill involved. A lot of people have 2 different breaks, a run out break and a golden break. I'm not saying there's no luck involved but its not just a case of whack the pack and it might go in. I used to get 4 or 5 a day years ago but now I'm lucky if I get 1 a month cos I don't try for them.

i disagree, because then you need to clarify the boundary of what classes of you getting a "shot" at winning the frame. if they break and clear a few then leave you in an impossible situation was that really getting a shot? although i dont like losing points to run outs and gbs then points could be made that its unfair to lose points etc when you really had no chance in a frame. best to just take it on the chin as it doesn't happen much.

Just about the only person who agrees with me on the Skill basis. If they look on youtube and modify the break slightly then they can do it too.
I use the normal UK GB Break but i put two pixels of topspin so the white runs through the pack.

A break you have memorised or can get from youtube that occasionally gives you golden breaks. Doesnt sound too skillful to me.

My point exactly...and it's not guaranteed everytime so it's more luck than skill..

It takes time to learn or "memorise" the break! Run outs aren't guaranteed every time either, it all comes down to what break you use.

Runouts are fair as even if you know a break it still requires skill to clear up.
However even if you memorise a golden break there is always going to be a certain amount of luck so I do agree its a bit gay. However rank is utterly pointless now as no one is really going to ever beat the highest ones. Not like it used to be anyway which was always an aim.
