Choose the one which will accommodate your players best, so for example if you have 3 quality attacking midfielders then play 4:2:3:1 try to play your players in their correct positions, usually judged by their preference of foot but this doesn't always apply to wingers, you can play a left footed on the right wing, just means more likely to cut inside more frequently than run to the byline.

It's better to pick a style of play then mood your team around that rather than the other way round. Some formations can be better than others, but every formation has a weakness. If you have more attacking. Players then you'd be better off with an attacking formation, and vice versa with defensive players and defensive game plans.

Match your instructions to your formation, so don't go for 4-5-1 and play ultra attacking. And careful with team instructions too, counter attack and men behind the ball don't really work together as one is an attacking. Instruction and the other is defensive.

There are threads on the soccermanager forum which are a lot of help, but there's some things you just gotta work out yourself, like the best formation to play. Either go with your strengths or try to guess the opponents position and go for a counter formation.
