Why? You break off exactly the same, umpteen times, then from nowhere the black goes in, poor way to win or lose, imo of course. Opinions?

It's a fluke shot, rewarded with a win.

Some people spend hours studying the angles & percentages, to get slightly more fluke wins. It's not skillful. In real life and in most places it's a foul and a loss, but here it's a fluke and a win, with a better percentage for nerds

It needs changing.

not if you master it, before arcade i got 6 golden breaks in space of 2-3 hours on UK in practice.

9 ball you would win in real life so having it in UK on funky evens it out a little bit.

quote from the great buddytobud (R.I.P):

"A plant or double is not necessarily a fluke.
Your opponent may have grasped the concepts of 'a shot to nothing' and 'with safety in mind' even if you haven't.
You missing an easy shot is your problem, not your opponents.
A 'run of the balls' is a fact of life ... deal with it.
A higher rank increases the odds of a win, it does not guarantee one.
If you are really upset by losing an online Snooker game - congratulations, you must have a wonderful trouble free life!
A tirade of abuse is no substitute for skill."

I agree with everything buddytobud said.

A GB shouldn't be a win. You can play 4 frames, be at 2-2, and then a fluke GB takes all the hard work away without you getting a shot. Most of the time the breaker didn't mean to do it.

It is all part of the game but i would not call it a fluke as there is only a few breaks that actually can pot that black from break and if that player continues to use that break all the time then they are always trying to get that golden break there for not a fluke in my eyes.

It has nothing to do with the break itself either, if you look closely sometimes you will see the pack has slightly moved a little, example is on mini golf i think ab_rfc says you need the white to be high/low on last hole to get a shot at the hole in one on that one. The slightest movements of these packs and balls make all the difference in breaking or splitting the pack.

(I am on about uk8 here, not sure about us8 rules)

Oh I can't wait until spinner sees this, I love reading his view on golden breaks. I believe he played so many games and got 1 golden break and felt like resetting his stats, I think it was spinner anyway.

But I agree, most places if you pot the black off the break I think the rules have been changed now and it's a re rack and play again. This is all fair in my eyes, playing for a golden break is just disrespectful to your opponent in my opinion.

And those who are happy about golden breaks make it even worse, you are happy that you fluked a shot and beat your opponent by a shot which is against the actual rules of the game. That is just like me being really happy about my opponent being disconnected before they get a chance to finish their game.

If you want to win without giving your opponent any chance of getting to the table do a run out.

what about 9 ball though surely its fair spreading the gb across all game types rather than just 9 ball?

oh and funky means that java can be run on old machines not that rules is different.

next person who can't grasp meaning of funky will get my big size 12 boot oh and a thread made about the meaning in game queries

Not at all it is well within the rules of the game of 9 ball in real life. It is not in Uk8 (not sure about us8 but I doubt it)

Mich is absolutely right. We shouldn't be proud about gbs, in fact Kirk and I used to get disgusted everytime we got one because it spoilt the chance of a runout. 9 ball is understandable because its technically a 1-9 combo, but in UK, if I planted black it counts as a loss not a yellow-black combo!

Keep it for 9ball, re-rack it for UK and 8 US.

I once got 12 in an hour in uk on my way to 125-9 win. So it's not like I can't do it I just think it shows a complete lack of respect for your opponent and the game itself.
