Sometimes you can put yourself at a disadvantage by hitting your own ball, and on rare occassions both players can put themselves at a disadvantage by hittings there own ball. This usually happends when a players last ball is over the pocket, and the opponents ball is directly in front of it.
What about using the 3 consecutive foul rule they use in 9 ball?
