I think this sums it all up beautifully... Every single player has a different way of approaching game etiquette. The thing that causes the biggest problem is our own expectations - if you get angry seeing 'gg' early, then you are only putting yourself off!
Better to take a leaf out of madmiketyson's book; take it as a compliment and laugh back at him

if you get put off by 2 letters then surely you need to look at your own game before blaming your opponent. If I put "ns", you wouldn't be put off, so why would 2 different letters put you off anyway?

I think the problem people have with opponents saying gg before the end is that, by its common use (it's normally said at the end), it implies that the game is over. But if the game is still in play, then players assume that it is only being said with the hope that it distracts and causes a miss.
Especially if they say it right after they missed a shot, yeah I admit I do assume, and think its a little bit rude.

"gg" means good game. What's wrong with saying it half way through a game (For example, a long safety battle with great shots from both parties can constitute a gg response half way though)

I've got a new way of looking at it:
gg = "good" game
If you play a game and the winner says 'good game'; of course it's good - he won! The loser is then forced to say it was a good game (irrespective of whether or not it was), because if he doesn't he is preceved to be a bad loser or an ?????????????? (to quote another player).
For me 'gg' has become a meaningless statement; empty like the soul of a zombie. Said for the sake of saying, but with no meaning; no consideration for the game just played, no thought of what has gone on.
I always try to say 'gg' first (as loser), will never say 'gg' if it was not a good game - opponent flukes but doesn't acknowedge it or i am grossly unlucky, will never say 'gg' first as the winner (only rubs salt in the wounds), only (as winner) if my opponent chooses to use it first, and always try to use other words such as "hard luck", "that was a close one", "jeez, we were both unlucky there... sorry man", etc.
For example, I played w_hoolahan in a straight tourni today. Twice my white went into the pocket off the smash into the pack, once it sat square with the pack. At the end of the game Harry said "gg ul.. werent going well for you then.. lots of cue balls in". Fair statement = thought (not zombie). I replied "here here, thank you, gg & gl with the rest of it".

I think everybody's got a different view when it comes to table etiquette, but if we are all aware of the game around us (not zombie creatures), we realise that people are different (not necessarily not nice), and that nobody likes to lose, then the hole 'gg' thing doesn't become such a big issue.
