In the modern pub game of 8-Ball pool in the UK, there are are 2 sets of rules, what we call the 'old rules' and the 'new rules'. On funkypool we currently use the old rules and I think it would be good if we could implement this in a way that when a player creates a new 8 Ball UK game, the player can choose which rules to play. With tournaments, if the choice between old and new rules was random - but clearly stated so that no-one could complain that they didn't know which rules they were playing - it would add to the excitement.

The new rules are:

1. On the break, 4 balls have to hit a cushion or otherwise it is a re-rack.

2. After the cue ball has hit the object ball, at least on ball on the table must hit a cushion.

3. If a person is snookered, they can call 'total' and they can play the cue ball wherever they like and rule number 2 is not used.

4. If a person is snookered after a foul, they can call 'foul snooker' and can either move the ball and/or pot any ball they wish.

If anybody would like to add to this they can, as there may be tiny things I have missed

EPA Rules (old rules) are still played in many leagues around the UK, including the league I run.

World rules (new rules) are like 8US really. Apart from the break, and 2 shots. In the World Rules, you only get 1 shot if you pot the white, on the break as well.

But on this game, how you going to say "total" (total snooker - you don't have to hit a cushion after a shot), or Foul Snooker (Total Foul Snooker - You can move the ball, or Nominate a ball to use as a free ball).

There are also Blackball rules, and Hybrid....... And many more.

If we still go along with this though...

Another rule I forgot was:

5. If the cue ball is potted off the break, but at least 4 balls hit a cushion so that it is a legal break, the opponent only has 1 shot.

I think they're fine the way it is, that's why this site is called 'funky'pool and isn't going to have every single rule exact same to current day-to-day ones

What you are calling 'new rules' is actually called World Rules and is the predominate rule set in England, in recent years the rest of the world (in pool terms pretty much just Scotland, Wales, Australia, France) Blackball is becoming the more predominant rule set. 8ball UK is a strange emalgamation of the lot, it's an fun online game though and shouldn't be looking to move towards 'proper' pool imo.

World Championships are play with World Rules, Blackball rules, have less amounts of pool leagues around the UK, and other countries.

Totally disagree chris, the rules that are played on here are the rules that are played in pubs and leagues all over the UK.
The only differences are you can pick up the white ball and move it anywhere behind the baulk line from a foul and golden breaks don't exist...just a re-rack.
