I'll just quote myself from the same thread on snooker :

The whole like/dislike thing can only work, a bit like polls, if people have to post a detailed reason why they like or dislike a post before they can click it.

Then, of course, there is absolutely no point in having a like/dislike feature because you can just read the posts

*like*

I think this may have been suggested once, a very long time ago. But I quite like the idea.

Some people like ideas but cannot be bothered to post.

We would also need something in place so people do not abuse a feature like this, like disliking everything that one particualar person says on several threads.

This is where the idea falls down. Like polls, without a detailed reason why someone likes or dislikes a post, it means absolutely nothing.

This could also encourage arguments if this was to be implemented.

Let's say if two people are arguing and it is turning nasty, if others get the chance to "Like" or "Dislike" any comments before staff intervention then this could lead to inviting more people to the situation.

If people know this feature very well on facebook, then you would remember that the "Dislike" feature used to be there but that is no longer there most probably for the same reason.

Well if you like a post, then that normally means you agree with the whole post.

But with Facebook, you can see who has 'liked' a status post or a comment. We can change that on here and have a similar system to what Yahoo Answers have, which has a 'thumbs up/thumbs down' system and the identity of who liked/dislikes an answer remains annonymous.

I don't think that something like this will actually decrease the amount of forum posts. We can avoid arguments and conflicts if the identity of those giving the thumbs up/down stays annonymous.

So with the detailed responses that you refer to spinner, you wouldn't need them if the identity of those who gave a like/dislike remains a secret.

The whole idea in this specific feature is knowing who has liked this and who has disliked that, without this it would be pointless.

If you have the time to browse the forum, you have the time to post

Not necessarily, what if I'm just having a quick look before I go to work/school/lecture or anything like that, don't have time to post but one click and I can share my opinion

But you're not sharing your opinion, you're just clicking a generic button.

It's *why* people like or dislike a post that matters. Without that explaination it is meaningless.

You are, not everything needs to be a detailed description, sometimes a simple *like* would suffice

In my view, it means total agreement with that post/comment.
