The undersea earthquake that struck on Monday measured magnitude 7.7. Waves reportedly as high as three metres lashed parts of the Mentawai Islands.

Officials say the waters swept as far as 600 metres inland on South Pagai island, the area worst affected. Ten villages were swept away.
