Put yourself in situations where you can play without nerves.
(this should obviously be the preferred state of affairs when playing league games etc too, but most players get nerves in one degree or another in that scenario)
Practice and play as much as you find time for (and find fun) and it'll come back to you

I echo the above. Fun is the operative word. It's always vital to remember this is just a computer game.
As with any game if you find it affecting you in any negative way, be it stressful, or frustrating, or whatever, just close the browser and do something else. Life's too short and too much fun to let some random website affect it

Example - Kevin Pietersen in cricket - when not performing at highest level go back to lower levels in the rankings and improve form and thus confidence - then play the top guys.
I know I will get stick for this comment but when I sign on each day I always start with lower ranks or friendlies to assess my form before playing the high ranks.
Good luck
Al

You'll get no stick from me, but I must admit I find that strategy kinda flawed... If it does turn out you have a bad day, you risk losing a lot more when playing lowbies (especially since many may be "fake" ones too).

Play friendlies against lower ranks or guests.
The more wins you get the more confident, then go to rank, play lower ranks to start with and as your confidence builds play higher and higher until you feel comfortable.

Is confidence built on winning or losing games anyway?
For me, it's far more down to my own performance in terms of pot percentage (or rather, potting the shots I feel I ought to pot with ease rather than with worry)

Exactly. Enjoyment of the game is all about satisfation in your own performance and/or enjoyment of an evenly matched exchange, irrespctive of whether you win or lose. After all you could be having the best day of your life skills wise, but a few awkwardly times phone calls, or an opponent having an equally good day, can mean you don't win a thing.
I'd far rather lose a good game, than win a dull one.

^which guests and lower ranks tend to give you more chances to do

If you are able to value good shots on your own part as much when playing lowbies as you would while playing pros, sure.

Problem is that surprisingly many players are always 100% consumed with themselves and thinking their own effort is the only thing affecting the outcome. When they win they win because they played well. If they lose, or don't win as much as their own expectations, it is entirely because they play bad, have bad luck, or their opponents are lucky and fluking all the time.
A sensible player will always acknowledge and welcome the simple fact that any game outcome is the result of both players efforts - for better or worse.
If you lose that's a result of you playing worse than your opponent. You may still both have played great. Just like you may very well win a game where you played appalling - if your opponent played even more so.
So give your opponent the credit they deserve - if you play bad it is often a result of what your opponent is doing to do - and not a coincidence.

I have the same thing atm playing crap all the time and nothing like what i used to be, now though i pretty much play for fun and i dont really come on as much.
I still have some good mates that i practice with and they try and help me out with shots etc to get me back on track, but really you just gotta have a laugh not devote your life and not take any stick from critics.

I have to agree with that also happened to me, I was away from the game for a few months and found that i wasnt as good as i used to be (even thou ive never been that good anyway) But i think part of that is new people joining the site and people getting better. Dont forget thou this is for fun, you win some you lose some. Just keep enjoying it.
One tip from me thou
Dont drink too much when playing it does effect your game play
