Do you get Lag - cue marker won't move - can't play shot in time limit grrrrr - I hate it when that happens (and I have lost games because of it) and I have very good 20mb broadband and latest pc.

So I tried to resolve...and the best solution was to switch off anti virus software during game play. I still get lag but hugely reduced.

anyone else got any suggestions....Al

1. Network has absolutely nothing what so ever to do with this.

2. Lose as many background tasks as possible.... The anti-virus is one, I'd bet there are others.

Ending Explorer.exe makes a huge difference. If you are running Vista or 7 then end a task called:

"sidebar.exe"

Also, adverts can cause lag spikes. Look around the forums and you will see some topics on lag.

Best thing to do is what i said up top. Also for the adverts, You can reduce the quality of them by right-clicking and selecting "Quality".

IE is a terrible browser for this game. Opera seems to have by far the less lag, however it doesn't work with this game too well.

i use FF on windows 7

never had it crash on me in 8 months use
never had lag

IE i rarely use on laptop because it has a tendency to crash and i find FF much easier, quicker and less cluttered

And in-game the tables bigger on FF (without hiding the toolbars and such) so thats handy

Problem with that is that it resizes the window to show you the title bar as soon as your cursor hits the top of the screen - which it will do on almost all shots you make. Messy deal, unfortunately.

McAfee is getting a very bad reputation just now for excessive scanning and false positives on freeware, likewise Chrome has built up a big list of known issues many associated with Nvidia graphics drivers, which are very common.

Lag has, and will always be an issue for some users, and one that will never have a definitive solution due to it being so machine/setup specific.

Something I have suggested to people in-game for a while now, is to reboot before playing.

My logic was that (after a very mini-poll) it seemed a lot of people get on the net, check facebook, bebo, emails (if they're old fashioned) browse a few favourite sites for news and info, watch a few youtube vids, download a file or two, sync PDA/Phone/iPod etc, do some homework, and only then settle down for a few games of pool.

By this time any number of programs could be running in the background slowly gobbling up resources one by one. So, starting with a clean slate is a good option.

If you are really serious, you could set up a seperate "pool only" user on your system so nothing else runs except your browser.

Iv been getting alot of lag over the last week or so as well, also been logged out when an invite cames on a few occasions, i had heaps of lag yesterday , closed everything i had running apart from the forum page , as soon as i closed the forum page the lag went, opened it again and it came back , iv never had any probs with lag since being a premium member until a week ago, has anything changed in FP that could be causing this , because it seems to me having the forums open at the same time as playing is the cause of my problems ??

Hi Chaos
I don't have any other page open when playing pool games to avoid lag. The adverts on the forums page cause lag as "data packets" (getting techie!) are downloaded into your pc.

Turning off anti virus during game play has had the biggest single effect. I purchased premium membership as I thought not having adverts would improve situation but I noticed hardly any difference.

Too true!

I can of course not possibly know, but I think it is a very safe assumption that a log of the lag people experience is caused by different applications they are running in addition to pool, knowingly or not.

That presumes logging out the other user though.... If you only switch to another user, the other user's applications keep running - which is a large part of the point with being able to have multiple users logged in concurrently in the first place.

^^ Thats a very good point I can;t recall being raised in lag discussion before.

Is the computer you're using being used by other people who may have left themselves logged in?

Is it being used as a fileserver for anything? Not just as a filestore these days, do you have a DLNA setup? If you're using a transcoding server it could be placing a substantial load on your machine depending on what others may be doing.

The possibilities are endless. I remember spending about a week exchanging messages with someone years ago, before they mentioned; "funny thing is, it only happens when I'm burning CD's"

To answer the question in the heading - yes, I hate lag

But it is one of those things that will come up every now and again...sometimes just a slow internet connection

I think it may be the game this time because since last night i have has serious lag, and its still here this morning and it isnt my comp as nothing has changed, and iv noticed a lot of people have this since the issue was raised.

Maybe server needs restarted or something?
