Not 1969 I'm afraid... The format for how the data is gathered might have changed, but the chart we have today is considered to have begun in a certain year in a certain publication with a certain first No 1.

According to the Official Charts Company, the official British singles chart was the New Musical Express chart from 1952 to 1960, the Record Retailer chart from 1960 to 1969 and the Official UK Singles Chart since 1969.


published in NME on 14 November 1952, with Al Martino's "Here in My Heart" awarded the number-one position
