It followed the First Opium War between China and Britain. British forces occupied it in 1841, and the following year it was formally ceded to the UK under the Treaty of Nanking. The Chinese had confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. Ergo, war.

It is correct, but not in 1841.

My bad, it is in 1841. The last of Hong Kong was captured in 1898 for 99 years. Your turn Mr Cloone!
