No idea what one is, but I'm guessing it's related to the word hieroglyphics, even if it doesn't come from it. What is a glyph anyway?

a glyph is any symbol whereas hieroglyphics i think only refers to the egyptian language

glyph comes from French glyphe, from Greek glyphe "a carving", from glyphein "to hollow out, engrave, carve".

hieroglyphic(s) comes (via Late Latin) from Greek hieroglyphikos, which is hieros "sacred" + glyphe, as above. So they're related although very different

Reminds me of a thread somewhere on the forum about where words come from, dunno if it's still alive
