Hi
I hop someone may help out here, when i upload videos ive made from my digital camera (Kodak easyshare) i can play them on my computer via realplayer but when i tried to upload it too youtube or send to windows media it tells me its a .MOV file and is unable to recognise it.
How do i convert from .MOV to ...say... WMV or another useable media file?
Or is there something i should do regarding the camera and computer 1st?

cheers

download 'any video converter' << thats the name of it. from google, you can convert to all sorts of formats, however youtube should convert it itself and I know I've uploaded.mov files before :S give WMV a go though it may work

I checked on youtube and it appears they cant convert .MOV itself, i tried to upload in media player but it said it didnt recognise it ...played sound but no images.
Is there nothing in windows XP that can do it?

sounds like you need to get some editing software and then output it as a video file, I have a Kodak zi8 HD camera and can't get soundbars in my Sony vegas editing suite, but I can in adobe premiere, try editing it in premiere and then outputting it as a .MOV, then get the 'any video converter' and convert to wmv or whatever format you like, heres the link to 'any video converter'

http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

unfortunately I can't get you a link for Premiere as you have to pay for it and to be honest it's extremely expensive, I'm sure if you look in the right places you might be able to get it for cheaper or even free

what you mean, you should have a destination folder that the converted file has been put into, for AVC it's usually in the my documents area of your pc, then just upload that on youtube

No, AVC is "any video converter" the software you use to convert the video, when I convert a video, the finished file is usually localed in my documents > any video converter > wmv and it should be in there

and no worries, we all start somewhere mate, I've had years of practice and am doing media production (making video's websites etc) at university, if you need anymore help just give me a shout

try wmv or avi, they always work for me, how long is it out of interest because youtube has a limit on filesize that you can upload, maybe the file is too big or too long

Thats a massive file size for a 5 minute video.

.wmv, while not being the best of codecs is ideal for youtube due to its basic options, so I'd reccomend that as a file format too.

Well the Recommended size and length is upto 2mb and no more than 10 mins, the initial files on my desktop are 174mb but the converted .wmv files are about 23mb.......its still telling me its failed to convert

:S try starting again from scratch, with the original file on camera, convert it straight to .wmv then post it up, as Spinner says, .wmv isn't the best of codecs, it is the lowest file size so therefore suitable for the web, I'd say a 5 min video should be between 30-40 mb, youtube's maximum size for a video is 2GB so you should be well within that, I've never had any problems like this before and have edited and uploaded to youtube for a good few years now :S, I'd guess it's a problem with the video itself, I'll speak to my lecturer on Monday and see if he has had any similar problems.

Well...............i dont know how relevent what im about to say is.......but, I had this crazy notion, my original attempts i go to you tube via firefox......so i thought, ill try youtube via IE.

In Firefox the upload seemed extremely quick (about 1-2 mins for a 23 mb 3-4 min file) and there was no time countdown or mb count up on the progress.

In IE however....the upload progress bar was steady, along with the time remain countdown and the mb loaded progress.

Anyway in IE it works

But while i have your attention and you have good knowledge of things video.......how come when i upload pics and videos from my camera to a folder on my PC, i cant rename or drag and drop videos like i can pictures......a warning come up about it being protected ......

it's because somehow on your cam you've put some protection on the video, so it can't be deleted or whatever, unfortunately the only way to get around it that I know of is to convert it and then rename the file, I think anyway. other than that just right click, copy and right click paste, then when it's copied it should be able to be renamed

yeah i can copy and paste to desktop then its fine, was just curious at why it wouldnt allow me to have free range at the 1st upload......anyway......thankyou for all your input, its much appreciated....and to you too spinner
