In all disciplines of funkypool, whether winning or losing, a player can roll up behind his own balls in order to gain either a free ball or a carry.
I put the question to you... Is there ever a right time to roll-up?
Please take, for example, the semi-final of the 8 Ball tournament (00:00, on the night of 30th December 2009); when in the 3rd game - players name removed - rolled up behind his one remaining ball instead of simply potting his brown (his 3rd last ball), then the orange whilst at-the-same-time planting into his opponents ball to pot his red (which was set up for a perfect plant).
If he had of done this he would have been perfectly set up on the black for the game.
***************
I call on the moderators of this funkygame to put this said game on view (by link) for all to see so that we can discuss the pros and cons of rolling-up.

It's their shot, let them do what they want.
That's all there is to be said.
You might want to remove their name too.

Rogan,
I'm not attempting to name and shame anybody here.
I just thought that it was a topic worthy of discussion.
And let me say it now... LOUD AND CLEAR:
the player played a topper of a game and fully deserved to win... there is absolutely no doubt. It is quite simply that this game is a great example of this discussion.

Yes. That's the short answer, in that there's never a wrong time to play any type of shot, as long as you know what you're doing and you play the shot well, i.e. it turns out how you want it to. In some cases, foul shots have been played, and these have been to gain an advantage later on, but at the risk of being heavily penalised by the opponent's immediate advantage following the foul.
The player in question, whoever it was, obviously decided that the easiest thing for him to do was snooker you and then get ball in hand after your miss. He could have attempted to clear and succeeded, but once the turn was handed back to you, you had some chance to influence what happened next. If you had hit your ball, his plans would have been in a mess. I'm presuming you were snookered by his roll-up.
There's nothing you can do about snookering, and I snooker and am snookered all the time, and I show my appreciation for a good horrible snooker when it happens to me. If the opponent has a chance to clear and doesn't, then so be it. They might mess the snooker up, or you might escape the snooker, and even pot a ball or snooker them into the bargain. The rules say nothing about snookering someone, so do what you can to take advantage... apart from PMing them or distracting them in some other way, which is unsporting. In the case of PMing, it's also cheating.

By the way, was this thread hiding somewhere? I only saw it an hour or two ago!

Just go on practice table pot a few balls, put the white in a compromising position ad try escape, you will get better and will then welcome a good snooker

It's all part of the game.
In any game you should maximize your chances of winning. Playing snookers can do this.
It sounds like you feel they made the wrong move to maximize their chances as there was an easy clearance on - that may be the case, but if so it was to your advantage.

I appreciate all of your responses.
It would seem to me that all of you think that I have some kind of hatred towards the player in the game I mentioned above when infact I was very happy to lose those games as he was by far the better player (and what's more I let him know this at the time and also made him aware that I was posting this here and that no offence was intended).
The reason I posted this topic on the forum was only to try and get responses from my peers on a subject that causes quite alot of consternation.
I entirely agree with clooneman that if a player plays a skilled snooker then they are deserving of it. And mich is bang on when he says that if you practice the shots that you least like to play then you become a better player.
<> <> <> <> <> <>
All that said I do have issue with players rolling up onto a ball when the cue ball is only 1 or 2mm away... especially when they could have just as easily potted all the balls.
I hope we can talk openly about this subject as all views are valid and worthy of being viewed.

Hi potlimit - it is an interesting subject and worthy of debate.
The names on forum threads like these are always removed as in the past they have often descended into name calling. Therefore very quickly after the forums started we disallowed all naming and shaming, even if minor and used factually.
