Because you have a pound each way on 14/1, and you get a quarter of the odds for a place (1st-5th), so basically you had a pound on 14/4, or 7/2, so that's 4.50 back off that, 3.50 for the winning part of the bet, and your pound back on that. Quarter of 8/1 is 2/1, so a pound on 2/1 is 3 pound back, giving you a grand total of seven pound and fifty pence, comprende?
