Remove java completely, go to http://www.java.com and download the latest version.

Reboot your computer.

Should work. (Usually does anyway!)

Lets make sure you have a fresh, clean install. Old/Duplicate versions can cause problems.

- Go to control panel
- Add remove programs
- Remove ALL the java versions you see (there may be more than one).
- Clear ALL browser histories including downloaded program files.
- Reboot (even if you're not told to)
- Then visit http://www.java.com for a new, clean, install.

Advice on the same page:

If your applet is not displaying properly, please check these additional configurations.

- Enable Java through your Web browser
- Enable Java through the "Java Plug-in Control Panel"
- Clearing your Web Browser Cache

That's what I was getting at. I use Firefox and there's a box you need to tick to enable it.
