Is there any chance of having a bye opt out in tournaments?
I personally do not like them, and I know I'm not alone on this.
I join tournaments to play, not sit around for sometimes up to four rounds before I get my first game.
Maybe it could be a tick box on your 'edit profile page', I know bye's are an integral part of the tournament system, and are a necessity, but if there could be some 'preferential treatment' for people who want to play, I can only see this as a good thing.
Plus I can't see too many people complaining about this as they don't have to 'tick the box' so to speak, and get even more of a chance of a bye if they so choose.
Thoughts and theories please.

no, you should get what your given and thats it.
If you have a bye - then you have to wait. Yeah, it sucks...but if 75% of tournament players ticked this box, then nothing would change...as there would be an overload of people who dont want byes.
just take them, your a step closer in the final.
if you get bored, go to http://answers.yahoo.com

You have loads available games to join and play while you wait.
I don't really see how there can be a negative to having a bye.
Your through to the next round, less work to win it, closer to the final as aflumpire says, happy days.
If you hate waiting, you can go play a ranked, friendly or have a practice game in a chat room, there is not anything stopping you.
So, can't see anything wrong with having a bye personally

I Basically cheer when I have a bye.
Less work, gets you closer to final.
What more could youn want.
Although if you have to wait a while thats a negative but apart from that keep the byes!

I think your misunderstanding the point I was trying to make, let me clarify:
It has nothing to do with boredom, waiting or the many available options for a quick game or two. It is that I would like to play as many rounds as possible without byes. This to me represents a greater achievement the further I get in a tournament.
It's a suggestion of a personnal preferance option, that's all.

but you still have to win games to get to finals.
sure, 3 games here and there do add up to a lot. But if you want personal achievement, then aim higher and go for the tournament win. That takes a bit of skill, and luck if you get a few byes and I would rather tournament wins on my profile than any other stat (except a golden break).
Byes are apart of funkypool. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, its a really fun way to see how you can play against the best. On the downside is byes....but to the upside of that is you get ever closer to the big stat of a tournament win.
keep it status quo for now

I like this idea. I really do. From a purely selfish point of view, it would increase my chances of actually getting a bye! However, we do not know for sure the algorithm used to keep logged-out players etc apart (although I have speculated about it in an earlier thread somewhere). Ensuring players who don't want byes don't get them might complicate things a bit. But, as I said, I like the idea that a player who wants to be not considered for a bye can get to play.
Remember, by the way, that if, say, 5 players opt out of byes and Round 1 sees only 4 players play, you're still gonna have one player with a bye! But more then likely that would be the only round in which this would happen.
The only alternative is that byes are spread evenly among all players as the tournament progresses. But, again, that would involve a special bit of programming.

Brilliant idea!
To people who say play games while your waiting, what do you do when you get your invite halfway through a game.....if you leave you get an abandoned game on your profile plus a loss so dont say leave....lol
Although i rarely enter tournaments now or ever, id definitley tick this option if it was available as to me and a lot of people i know on here, byes are the worst thing in the world!
Good shout Kelvin

i think this would be a great option, but 1 downside i could see is what happens if an opponent logs out?? leaving an uneven number if this would be self rectifying then yes im all for it

I thought of that and have the answer prepared:
Tough poopy, you get the bye as would normally occur in these circumstances.
The idea is not flawless or guaranteed to provide a game every round as that would be unfeasible.
It would just increase the chances, for those that choose too, of avoiding the bye.

but why do we need to alter the system when its fair how it is.
The player who has a bye WILL have the greater advantage in winning.
Weather its opt in or not, that is not a fair tournament.
If you are given a bye, you are given a bye. Do something else, play a game, do some Sudoku or find another website to entertain yourself for 22 minutes!

As you said before, you have to win games to get to finals. If a person elects to 'disadvantage' themselves that would be their perrogative.
It's fairly obvious that you would not elect to 'choose' to do this, which is again your 'choice.'
I cannot comprehend that you do not see this as an option that would benefit yourself in this case, and could possibly get yourself closer to that 'big tournament stat' on your profile.
It is suggested as an option, such as what game you prefer to play, or whether you break off with the intention of achieving a golden break or a run out.

but it still unbalances the true nature of the tournament and then it does not become a fair tournament.
if 6 people out of say 20 were to elect to play games instead of a bye, yet only 2 games (so four players) are needed, then the other two will miss out and you are still doing nothing - which resolves nothing.
Like I said, it doesnt matter if the person does prefer to be disadvantaged, but it still makes it an unfair tournament because it has to take two options into account - and thats treating two different sets of players differently - which is unfair
when I say unfair - I mean it by the winner may not have been the best player there. Not as in certain players would be favored.
Keep it as fully random and take what your given.

Well when you think about it, do you think that Manchester United get upset because they miss the first few rounds of the FA Cup on byes??
"oh no, we want to earn some more money so we really want to risk the whole tournament for more money..."
(think money as game wins here on funkypool)
its the same thing!

^^^^^^ lol
in a proper tournament you clearly wouldnt mess with a draw to accommodate people's preferences however this is funkypool and meant to be for enjoyment - if you want to volunteer to play extra matches does it really matter? i would say no
the one 'downside' (but not really i guess) is that if you needed say 6 people for the first round and 6 of the better players had ticked this option then clearly 3 fall at the first hurdle. Is this bad/does that matter? no not really as it was their choice, they might have all been drawn against each other in the next round anyway, plus it doesnt really matter ultimately who wins or loses.

Manchester United dont get byes in the FA Cup pal, they just dont get entered in the earlier rounds, same as other PL teams, its not a bye.......if it was it would say Manchester United vs Bye.
And as said Flumpy just likes to disagree sometimes, unless someone in authority says they like your idea he wont change his mind......choices are never a bad thing!
