Moved here to let the queries thread on "cash for killer" stay on topic :
Bingo and poker are games of chance, thats the crucial difference. Just as if someone placed money on Ronnie O'Sullivan winning the masters would have been gambling.
However Ronnie himself paid his entrance fee, and went on to win. Was he gambling? I say no, as he used his own skill to earn the prize money.
True, its largely down to interpetation, but at the end of the day everything is personal choice. It's not gambling thats the problem, its the people who are addicts that is. Just the same as many other things, like food for example.
Should we ban children from eating because some people eat until it affects their health.

How can a tournament not be gambling?
You pay money and lose money (unless you win).
EDIT: So are you saying that a Bingo tournament or a Poker tournament isn't gambling Spinner?
Wow! I better get playing...

Yeah, but bringing gambling into a FAMILY POOL WEBSITE is a slippery slope. It is encouraging the younger generations to gamble as it excludes them from competing with (potentially) better opponents.
Some people enjoy playing high ranking opponents, and if they all disappear to gamble, then what's to say younger generations aren't to follow?
Plus the large majority of the website is the younger generation, so they're gonna be influenced towards seeing that gambling is right...
(Rubbish arguement atm, but I'm fuming so a better one will come later.)

Paying entrance fees to competitions for yourself i wouldn't necessarily call gambling, purely because the outcome is in your hands and no games of chance being involved.
Whether it'd be moral to bring into funkypool and whether it'd be good for funkypool are separate issues.

Why would you describe funkypool as a family pool website?
We would like to moderate the public chat rooms to a family friendly standard, filtering swear words etc, but I can't think what other reason for describing funkypool as this. (And yes, the chat content is unfortunately often not family friendly).

I've always been against gambling on the internet as I don't like the clientel it markets. I've seen the bad effects that gambling has on someone, I'd hate to see this site change to a gambling site.
(Which now I've read the other thread I know it's not)
If we're going to look at the moralality of gambling, my personal feeling is it's not moral at all, and is indeed wrong. (In my opinion)
Going on a night out every now and then and playing poker, or going to the horses or dogs once every couple of months is fine in my opinion as your normally doing it in a group of people as a social activity. Playing on the internet because your bored is when problems start to occur in my opinion. I know the arguements of backing yourself have some validity, but internet gambling is just plain wrong in my point of view.
I always describe funkypool as a family website, Nick. I do this because I thought it was for all ages, I know people that allow their children to play it too, hence the family orientation of it. I suppose it'a all about perception and interpretation.

Yes, that hasn't changed in that sense. People seem to bring up the fact it's a family website whenever an advert occurs which is against their morales, usually dating sites.
An old post on the subject might show my thoughts better.

(Gambling) banners are not bad either, they are similar to the adverts they display in the high street.
By being (family) friendly it just means we try and keep any explicit swearing or adult content away from the user.
Like any site if the user clicks on 3rd party content it can be adult material eg gambling, but the user would need to choose to enter that site (similar to the high street where the child could enter a betting shop, before being kicked out for being under age)

Personally, I have no issues with gambling, and indeed enjoy a trip to the bookies on occasion (Snooker Competitions, FA/World cup, grand national etc) and particularly like the challenge of electronic slot machines.
I know some people who bet regularly, usually each week, on football accumulators etc, which can add an edge to the weekends fixtures.
However, like so many things in life, you must be sensible and live within your means. In this sense I see gambling as no different to food, clothes, computers or indeed anything you spend money on, but which can lead you to become addicted, live outwith your means, and end up with all sorts of financial and associated health problems incurred.
Note that I didnt include alcohol and drugs (inc tobacco) - I see those as much more potentially damaging due to their mind altering and medically addictive and damaging properties.
My main criticism of internet gambling is similar to 1_eye's. It's so often marketed as a way of making money, wheras its really just a form of entertainment, like buying a ticket for a concert.

Bingo - gambling.
Poker - gambling to an extent in that you don't know what cards you're getting. But after that, it's skill.
Killer - skill.
A spoer played by someone else - gambling.
And here's a wee tale highlighting the difference...
In places where alcohol is consumed, English law has long permitted betting only on games of skill, as opposed to games of chance, and then only for small stakes. An apocryphal tale relates that in 1908, Jim Garside, the landlord of the Adelphi Inn, Leeds, England was called before the local magistrates to answer the charge that he had allowed betting on a game of chance, darts, on his premises. Garside asked for the assistance of local champion William Bigfoot Anakin who attended as a witness and demonstrated that he could hit any number on the board nominated by the court. Garside was discharged as the magistrates found darts, indeed, to be a game of skill.

To begin with, I am a self-confessed gambler...but I don't have a problem, I know how to keep a rein on my spending, and I'll never be in danger of losing my house, car, wife, kids, arms etc. I'll admit that I possibly spend too much when I do gamble, which is usually borne out of boredom, but I spend what I (and my daddy ) can afford, and I tend to get quite a lot of luck too, and I'm particularly good at poker, which I play for a 100 euro a go each tuesday.
One thing I would NEVER do though is encourage people to gamble, particularly if they have never done it before. It can ruin people's lives - not just the person doing the gambling, but many of those around them. I used to work in a betting shop a while back, and I have seen first hand the trouble it causes for people who spend more than they can afford...and as a member of staff of a betting shop, as much as you may often want to, you cannot refuse a person's bet (unless they are being rude or behaving inappropriately), so in that sense it's even more unfortunate for people with addictions - nothing can be done to stop them.
It might sound contradictory (it's not really ), but the fact remains that gambling is still a matter of choice, and if it's not illegal, it's not wrong. Almost everyone at some stage in their life gambles, from buying lottery tickets, scratch cards etc., to sticking 10 grand on trap 3 at the 11:03 at newcastle (no, I've never done that!).
Tis a fascinating discussion nonetheless!

You have to be 21 to gamble here in the US. Would the rules change depending on where you live? How would you be able to tell who is of age and who isn't? How do you stop the people who aren't of age?

Don't care, after all it really can't be policed, there's a way round everything nowadays, don't really think 14 yr olds playing killer pool for cash is going to corrupt the youth of today any more than it already is. Just look at the posts from people under 18 on here, the spelling and grammar suggests these people have never seen the inside of a classroom, don't think they're gonna be the brain surgeons of tomorrow.

hey, but look at all the upsides to this!!
will FP be making any money from this if it was to come in nick at a very small profit, or will it be winner takes everything that went into the pot without taking say a 5 cent fee??
because if it helps to take things away like...ads and banners and can help nick IMPROVE the site, then there are other positives for this too.
I think nick said that there would be a seprate site for it...which I agree with.
If its on another site, then I cant see any reason one can oppose it. FP keeps its 'Family atmosphere', and...Funky....whatever you call it was on a very similar, but of course smaller site (say no forums etc, etc); then it would work fine.
There will be those who oppose it, but all I can say to them is dont play. If you dont play, then you cant get upset.
I think that it would be a very slow take off, but many are always looking for gambling sites - and I cant think of many multiplayer ones of the top of my head...except a couple of poker sites.
Its soely based on each individual weather he/she plays or not. Maybe to promote 'responsible gambling', would it be wise for one to only lose a maximum amount each day before being bared for 24 hours (say 100 pounds or dollars).
if nick does it right (which im sure he will), then there will be very few problems, and it will be just like every other gambling site

if it is controlled then it is fine nothing to worry about and putting a few dollar as a entry fee, which would in return be a little reward for winning is not gambling!

what is your definition on gambling then nick111?
as you say, you put in a few dollars, and if you win you get the same or more money back. if you lose, then you lose money - thats gambling!!
like to say I was to put a bet for Queensland to beat Adelaide in the A-League. I put $10 on Queensland and they win, so I might get say $18 back - dont you class that as gambling because I sure do!! gambling isnt just for losses!
