One relative of one survivor said 29-year-old Eton-educated Crown Prince Dipendra remained silent and expressionless as he spent 15 minutes killing nine members of his family with two guns before turning one of them on himself.

During the slaughter, he cold-bloodedly shot two female cousins who knelt over the seriously-wounded Prince Dihendra, 51, to try and help him, the unnamed relative said.

"The witness heard the shooting but was so stunned that they thought 'Is this some new kind of game we are playing?'" said the relative.

"They hadn't even sat down to dinner, they had just had the first drinks, Crown Prince Dipendra was actually tending the bar and there appeared to be nothing wrong with him at all," said the relative.

"He went out of the room and came back in an army uniform with his cap pulled very low over his eyes and with two weapons in his hands. They didn't really understand what was going on until they realised the King had been hit.

"From the adjoining room, through the open door, one witness told of seeing the King's face with utter astonishment on it.

"He did the shooting, then came out of the room. At that point the Queen and his younger brother
Prince Nirajan went after him into the garden and that's when they got shot. The Crown Prince then came back in again and Prince Dihendra went toward him and told him: 'Put the gun down, you have done enough damage'. Dihendra was shot and fatally wounded.

"As he lay bleeding, two of the King's female cousins knelt over him to help and were themselves shot."

Dihendra told one of the women to reach into his pocket and get his mobile phone so she could call for help but the cousin couldn't do it because she appeared to be injured in both arms, said the relative.

"The eyewitness said the Prince was not able to control the gun, it being an automatic and it began firing upwards so that he was shooting at the roof so that bits of the ceiling fell down," said the relative.

"The Crown Prince just fired indiscriminately then went outside again and the party heard some shooting. At that time they thought military aides were getting shot, but that must have been the time he shot himself."

Fifteen minutes earlier the family gathering in the Kathmandu Palace had begun as it usually did on a Friday. There was no argument over Prince Dipendra's choice of bride as has been reported, said the relative.

"Friday was nothing special. It was a routine Friday night and it all went wrong."

Heir apparent, Prince Dipendra who automatically became King as he lay in a coma dying of his wounds after the killings, calmly served his family drinks then left the room and changed into combat fatigues and returned to begin the massacre, he said.

The survivor's account has been made public in an effort to quell the rumour that the killings were part of a plot to put the late King Birendra's brother, Gyanendra, 56, on the throne, which is what has happened according to Nepal's laws of succession.

A two-day curfew put in place to stop rioting triggered by the rumours was lifted today.

"I understand the mood in this country where everybody thinks it is a set-up," said the source. "But in this case it's unfortunate that the truth wasn't allowed to come out right at the beginning."
