im alarmed at the number of byes and dq's in the straight tournys, would any else agree that perhaps a shortened version might be more fun and attract more participants and maybe less people dropping out, i reckon maybe race to twenty and a ten second shot might liven it up a bit . your views ??

Why are you complaining?
Surely a BYE to the final is a good thing isn't it?
But I agree a 10 sec limit should come in

i dont think its any different from other tornys with bye or dq's but shorterning the time for games may help

Disagree with the idea of shortening the time of the general game. And I think that reducing the winning score in tournaments, speed or otherwise, might be a little hard to program; in any case, I'm settled with the first-to-35 format.

no way should we shorten the scores. Then its too easy to win and its only to one game.
I wouldnt mind if the time limit came down to 15 seconds. It doesnt seem much of a time change, but over a long period like Straight tournamnets are, then we would see a change

Shortening it ain't smart considering there ain't that many straight tourny's a day

Correct, zodiac. Plus, a good, decent run needs all the time we can. Any clown can pot their last red and pot the black it they're half set up. In straight, you need to pot 14 balls and set yourself up on the 15th so that the white will cannon into the pack. (Unless you're one of those luck-chasers who relies on a cowardly smash straight into the pack...)

Just checked, the latest tournament had no time related disqualifications. Did I miss something?

Probably not... Maybe people have learned to be more economical with their sots? Or maybe there were lots of good players vs bad players in the earlier rounds so that the scores weren't similar in the 20's with 5 mins left.
So players still get disqualified if they exceed 35 but they're in the middle of a run when time is up?
EDIT
Aaaaaaaargh, sorry... I had to do it!
Below is a table of the time each match in round 1 finished (they'd have started at 17:10) and the final score. When any player wins with less than 35 points, it's cos their opponent left.
17:16 23-4
17:17 8-8
17:18 17-4
17:19 35-11
17:19 35-6
17:20 35-7
17:21 40-10
17:22 37-8
17:22 23-17
17:22 35-2
17:22 36-18
17:27 36-16
17:29 35-25
Mostly thrashings, and only the last game (which took 19 mins) saw the opponent score more than 20. I think that this would have been finished on time, this despite the loser having a straight record of 1-12 and the winner one of 1-4.

Yes, that will be the case. In snooker the shot play on functionality is disabled in tournaments. I think this should be added here.

Thank you sir!
10 seconds for a straight tournament might make it a joke. Straight pool is a fairly blunt game in which the good players on a good day will always beat the average players on an average day, and crippling the good players by reducing the time would place a strange skew on the leaderboard, especially with just 3 tournaments a day.

your missing my point , the game itself is fine , what im seeing is lots of people get a bye first round , i appreciate thats gonna happen , it just seems that people who get byes arent ,in the whole ,hangin around for the next round so a lot of byes appear there too, was just lookin at a way to perhaps maintain peoples interest, i also know a lot who leave straight to play the followin tourny , which leaves inevitable byes in the latter stages.....

I understand what Lemsip is saying here, I believe it was a straight tourny two days ago for example, I was on also for the game and the first round there was a couple off games being played and the rest were byes adn DQ these games seemed to last the full time limit, In the next round there was something like 10-15 byes/DQ in the second round?.. Is this becuase off the waiting around for the next round or are people just needing to leave at that particular time (tea time in UK etc) there does seem to be more waiting around in the straight tourn than any other on Funkypool IMO. Its a great tourn dont get me wrong but can it be altered sligthly? One idea maybe less balls to be potted to win or reduce the time per shot maybe not as low as a quick same is there some compromise on the time? This may also keep some interest if thats why people are leaving, as also mentioned above if there is a long wait and another game starts then i would imagine some people would go and play a game. I for one hate sitting about waiting for long periods off time.
Also dont quote me on them numbers above, it was a good guess

like I said, if anything, shorten the time.
Otherwise its too easy to win if you are very good at getting onto a nice run

Ah yes, I getcha now.
My take on it is that byes at the start of round 2 in straight tournaments are the same as byes at the start of round 2 in all the other tournaments. And they happen because if someone leaves the game window idle for 15 mins or 20 mins or whatever, it's their own fault.
We all know that you get logged out after a while of inactivity. If a player enters a tournament, he/she has a responsibility to remain logged in the whole time. It's that simple.
Imagine you're in a speed tourney, and you get byes in three consecutive rounds. And get logged out. Tourney's fault? No. Yours? Yes.

another problem is the marathon tournaments being so close to the straight tournaments.
I am waiting for my good friend right now to play me as we are ment to play each other.
But he is in the 8 ball marathon tournament at the same time.
So you have two, very time consumong tournaments on at the same time.
And he just got DQ'd (as im typing). So maybe space the UK and US marathons out a bit more, and get faster tournaments (even speed tournaments) next to the straight tournaments??

Further proof: this evening's marathon tourney, round 2, http://www.funkypool.com/viewTournament.do?tournamentid=27506
32 ties, 16 of which are BYE-DQ, because 16 of the 64 players were notlogged in. That's a quarter DQ already. But there's nothing wrong with the marathon tourney.
There have been calls before, I believe, to allow players who are entered in ...
