do people think that 680's are newbies even if they have played more than 100 games?

ok..playing a bit of 8 Ball UK on flumpy.
I was...a 686 ( i think ) and this guy was a 740. I am inform and playing better than my rank.
After I beat him by a ball, he says im a fake newbie and leaves the room.
I PM him and say...' i have played more than 100 games' and he says, 'but your rank says your newbie'
I give him the link to aflumpire as it had a couple of hundred games and a rank of 674. he loks at it and says, 'yeah, newbie rank'
do players in the 740-750+ range have some sort of cockyness of been that rank that 680's are 'newbies' even if they have played 200 games??
sounds confusing yes, but this ius strange!

a newbie is someone who has played less than a 100 games so no i doubt many people consider people who aren't newbies- a newbie....you should have just told him to get over himself

Newbie is just a word, and as such quite uninteresting.
Lowbie is a better term in this context.
It's retarded when people get upset over someone being better than their rank. It is however completely understandable if they don't want to keep playing you, since it means their rank will hurt a lot.

I'll play most people without "newbie" next to their rank...
If they are 630 and play like an 800, I'd just try my hardest to beat em.

This is why i never understand the "I dont play newbies" statements.
If you are a around 800 and lose to a newbie on 675, you may only lose as little as 0.1 points.
Lose to a non-newbie on 675 and you will lose close to 5 points. So you're much better off playing the newbie!
Do remember though - if you are on 800, and dont play those on 675 in case you lose - what you're actually saying is that you are a fake pro!
Which is statistically much more likely than them being a "fake" newbie

Newbies have got to start somewhere. If a newbie comes to play me then I will play them.
Maybe something should be put in place to tell other users if a newbie has previously deleted or has another ID.

but you get less points for beating a newbie than for beating a low ranker but that doesnt matter-
if you are gonna play someone new in a ranked game then have a look at their profile to see if theyre a "fake" newbie before you decide - problem solved

While I don't think like that myself, I have no problems understanding it. First of all, the return for time spent is minimal (in terms of rank). Secondly, a lot of player will avoid low rank players all together, regardless of newbie status, simply because of wanting good gameplay.
Technically incorrect. The rank system is designed to be fair and balance out when, and only when, players who play at their respective "correct" ranks play eachother. Very much the same way a golf handicap works.
As sooon as either player does NOT play on a rank that is correctly reflecting the skill level, the other player will either gain or lose points artificially. Avoiding that does not make you fake.

"Fake" (such a bad word for this lol) newbies you can spot by looking at the profile, then again they are less of a problem anyway.
"Fake" lowbies hurt a lot more. Some you can spot by profile (looking at their rank in other game types for example, number of tourny games or whether they have reset stats - myself being a good example of the former). But most of the time, the only way of learning how a parcticular opponent plays compared to their rank is by playing them.
Which is what I like to do - I'll play just about anyone that wants to play me (the problem is typically more the other way around lol), and if it turns out they are much better than their rank and it's bad business to keep playing them, you simply move on. No harm done.

i agree that the rank scoring system is designed to be fair and balance out when both players play to their correct rank - however if that happens all the time then no player will gain or lose any points - except for minor variations. What spinner is saying is absolutely correct - if you are not confident in your ability to play against any and all levels of opposition and at least hold your own and not lose ground/points - then your ranking is false!

You can never tell if its a newbie because this place full off them at the moment, if someone deletes or is banned for some reason than they want to come back because they addicted they can come back in 5 mins with new name! cant they ppl!!!
Even if its a newbie (fake or not) they have a long way to go to reach the top of rank system, if thats what floats ya titanic.
I dont give to shakes on rank because i would rather lose to newbie in first round off tourn
Lol - not bitter honest
What about a lock on room and you can only enter if you have over a certain rank, but not forget that newbies need to start somewhere!!!
Also if we could have a tourn that starts like FA Cup all good players only enter in 3rd round. no thats crap idea ill go back to fridge
Ill shut up now!

but even myself sometimes with my UK rank (which is now around 690) click on a room and see an 800 in there, I leave because I dont like my chances.
I think the system works both ways lol....

and thats where players fail the ranking system - if you both play to your rank no one will gain or lose - but just like in a tourney where the winner advances to the next round - in rank the (overall) winner gets the points increase - you'll be telling me next you wouldnt play in a tourney if you got drawn against the 800 player

Good point, thats an angle we rarely see, but one i can sypathise with!
There are a few views here all of which are correct in their own way, it just depends how you're approaching the subject.
I'm guilty of taking this off-topic as well, so to stick to that (there are plenty of threads on the other rank issues) :
So, to answer the topic question - no.
Thats because (as i started to say then ranted off..) "newbie" isn't a term related to ability.
Someone who has played a lot of UK pool, or original snooker, who then signs up on the other site will almost immediately be of a comparable skill level on the other site (due to the similarity of the physics of the games).
However, they are rightfully still a newbie. As much to prevent them "damaging" other players scores as a "complete newbie" needs the adjustment to compensate for the learning curve.
This is why newbie status needs to be retained for reset players, however i do believe that, for the newbie period, a reset player could be a "Newbie (R)" to indicate a reset.

i like that idea about having a symbol next to the persons name. I always thought that a 'fake' newbie was a newbie above 699.99

i reckon people just shouldnt bt allowed to delete their account then make a new one they should make a log of all the i.p adresses it would save alot of hassle and mean their would be no "fake" newbies. but if your really worried check their rank first and the sign on date.

This is a great idea. Better yet, let them keep the R forever, so everyone can see who has reset and not.

The problem (sadly) with this line of thought is that there isn't really any way to accurately tie a single IP to a single person.
It fails on a many-to-many level:
First of all, many people may share the same address (schools, dorms, companies, living communities, cafes, etc etc), making an IP limitation hurt a number of other people.
Secondly, a single person may access this site through a multitude of IPs, one or more of which may be floating addresses that frequently change. (myself being a great example here, using the site from home, at work, parents' place, my phone etc). I've no idea, but the IP log on my user sure must look interesting lol
It's a pity tho, preventing second accounts would been great.
