When my pc messed up not long ago and I had to reinstall xp, I haven't got no drivers. God knows which ones I need to download either. I've been trying for about a week and a half. I've almost gave up on looking for them. All the sites I visit tell me I need different stuff.

I think viruses must of infected the drivers then avg deleted them.

It's extremely rare for viruses to affect drivers like that, and AVG will quarentine rather than delete in that case.

However, reinstalling would have overwritten them in all likelyhood (definitely, if you reformatted).

Do you have onboard sound or a seperate soundcard?

Nope, i dont think so. I'm using a really old pc

machine configuration:

Audio...... sis7012 sound codec
Mother board...... manufacturer: gigabyte technology co., ltd.
Product: GA-8SIMLT.

I'm not any good at techy stuff so could you please try to keep your answers as simple as possible.

Once Ive found the correct ones to download, will it be simple to set them up?

EDIT: I'm using XP.

I'm quite surprised the sound isn't working with generic XP drivers since it's an older system.

The SIS 7012 is quite a common soundcard, and the drivers can be downloaded here :

http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.php?id=155808

Just follow the instructions

Thanks for your help, spinner!

When i run setup-exe, the setup wizard pops up and starts to set it up but then this pops up:

Then this:

I cant seem to find any support for it on the sis site or gigabyte technologies site.

EDIT:

When i log on a funkypool game i get this message in the chat box:

Plus you asked if i get any onboard sound. It beeps every now and then.. like in ms paint, when you press the red x at top right of screen, it still beeps when the box pops up to ask if you wanna save.

Hmm.

Honestly, thats quite tricky to do much with remotely.

My only suggestion is to go to control panel> system > device manager

Look for any audio devices, and uninstall.

Restart the computer, and if you have no luck then i am forced to say it looks like a hardware problem.

Not an expensive one. Basic soundcards cost about a fiver, and installing isnt too hard if you have to.

Try that though, and let us know how you get on.

What he means there is that it is hard for him to help further without being at your computer himself. Instead he is in a remote location guessing what could be the problem.

Does seem odd, when you go into device manager does it show that there is a problem with the soundcard?

It doesn't even show that I've got a soundcard.

I did uninstall the audio devices like spinner told me to but it seems to of come back but still no sound.

I'll start from the beginning:

A while ago i kept getting a pop up saying "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close", even though i wasn't using ie. so i did a spyware scan and deleted whatever it found, then i did a virus scan and it found over 200 threats so it started to delete the threats without asking me first. Once it finished deleting the threats the pc automatically restarted itself. Once it had restarted, my pc started asking for a password (even though I've never set one). So i decided to reinstall xp. Once I'd done that i had no sound and some games wouldn't work.

Ok, sorry if you have tried this before, but on the device manager screen you just posted a screenshot of, right-click the C-Media AC97 Audio Device (thats your soundacard, basically) and select properties.

Select "update driver" and let it search the internet for some.

Very strange that XP isn't picking up a stanndard sound setup like that.

Well, i'd click that troubleshooter button and see what it says

The most common cause of a code 10 is an incompatible driver. Which makes sense as you said before that you had an SiS card but its showing up as a C-Media one.

Anyway, run the troubleshooter, and if that doesn't help (I'm not so sure it will, but always try) then post back and we'll try a detailed run at it.

It told me to "Uninstall and then reinstall your device". Which I've done with the add hardware wizard. Then it asked me to take the sound card out and put it back in to make sure its secure, which i know i don't need to do because the problem started when i reinstalled xp. Then it says "You have run into a problem that this troubleshooter cannot help you solve. For additional Windows resources, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Update". Which I've tried but cant find no updates.

Ok, lets try this.

DO you still have the SIS driver file there? If not, download it again.

Next, uninstall the sound device using add-remove hardware.

Now reboot, but when the "found new hardware" wizard pops up, click CANCEL.

Don't let it try to set up anything!

Now, try running the SIS driver file and see how you get on.

Next,

Sorry do make this hard for you but i cant find no add-remove hardware wizard. It only shows the add hardware wizard:

Please be patient with me.

Whats else is weird is that in control panel, it still shows windows firewall which i haven't used since i reinstalled xp. I'm now using comodo firewall. Plus that CMI audio config doesn't do anything when i double click on it. Posted Image

The only thing I can think of mate is to buy a new driver sound card it would be easier and comes with and installation disk it would be the best option I can think of or even try reinstalling windows and install all the drivers from the cd to the computer mate.

Thanks so much for all your help, everyone (Especially spinner). I bought this pc from my sister a while back but she said she couldn't find the driver disk.. She finally found it today so everything seems to be working ok now

Thanks again.
